49ers snap count: 22 players see action on defense

ATLANTA – One week after seeing his first NFL action at left tackle, 49ers offensive lineman Zane Beadles lined up in a position he had never before played.

With only a few practice snaps on the side during the course of the week, Beadles was pressed into action to play 13 snaps Sunday at center in the 49ers’ 41-13 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The 49ers (1-13) were losers for the 13th consecutive time to extend their own franchise-worst record.

Beadles the second start of his NFL career at left tackle in place of Joe Staley, who has missed the past two games with a hamstring injury. Beadles started the first 11 games of the season at left guard.

“It’s been an interesting couple of weeks,” said Beadles, a seven-year NFL veteran. “That’s something I pride myself on, being able to play multiple positions.”

Beadles got the call to play center ahead of rookie Alex Balducci after Marcus Martin was sidelined with an ankle injury in the second half. Rookie John Theus played 13 snaps at left tackle in his NFL debut.

"For Zane to be able to play three different positions on this offensive line and play at a very high level really speaks to his ability as a player," 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick said. "Theus coming in, stepping up and holding his own, as well, I think we have players that can step in. We just have to put it all together to get a win."

Twenty-two different 49ers players saw action on defense. The 49ers were especially thin at inside linebacker, where starter Gerald Hodges was benched due to a violation of team rules.

After starter Nick Bellore went down with an elbow injury on the third play of the game, the 49ers used defensive backs Antoine Bethea and Vinnie Sunseri, and outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks, at the inside linebacker position.
