1.4: 1-on-1 with Giants prospect Brandon Belt
Belt joins Mychael Urban on SportNet Central: The Hot Stove.
All right you've heard all about it you've seen the numbers but he never really heard from Brandon belt Brennan joins us via satellite from Texas Brandon thank you so much free time. I know probably traveling. I hate wanna get into your season last year first out this meteoric rise through the minor league system that while the Giants fans. Are thinking about your name and they are dying to hear from you tell me what it was like to to climb up the latter last year so steadily. And with such great numbers all the way through the system. I think he really knows pretty exciting even for myself. I'm never actually been through something like that before as far as baseball goes. I didn't really don't expect you know along the way is so -- just you know trying to. I guess the as they say take it one day at a time. I just you know innocent enjoy it enjoy the -- you know while -- citizen now. You know important for me it worked out you know most -- through and through than last year. You start the season in the California League down on the San Jose Giants you end up. In triple -- did you have any idea when the season started the media and up at the highest level of the minors. They know sometimes I'll tell people Gary yes and no because. I didn't know I and they ought to just that quickly to see them mechanics they had has shown me permits last year but you know -- That is helping handing me. And that I can hit the ball and -- that the battle ball Leno but like -- and understand no that wasn't able to adjust that quickly. And and you know kind of make those adjustments along the way you know whatever step by -- another boat fortunately it worked out for me. And -- have an established yourself as a rising star in the minors you got a chance to play in the procedures Arizona Fall League. We're all the other top prospects in baseball tell us what that experience was like. I was very exciting you know -- tell -- it was just an honor to be able to go to there's a quality. You know once you but you've obviously heard so much about -- in a -- of his baseball player and being in the minor leagues and who -- very excited to play against. No the other the other and they know best -- prospects in the in the minor leagues. And dumb you know it's something that there's a lot to take take away from that. And -- causes like -- -- is very excited to have a chance they would go. And leaving it to even be able to play in the rising stars game was this in this an added bonus and a you know that's something that you know I'll be able to reflect back and remember on for a smart. In the rising stars game in the NFL is of course the best of the best playing against each other. The best of the best is what the Giants ended up being as your wrapping up this magical season in the minor leagues they're wrapping up. A magical season in the majors now you're -- big league camp. When the defending world champions that's got to take a little bit of pressure off me in the -- prospect gone. As I mean I don't know I don't know that takes the pressure -- but. It's definitely going to be a lot of fun and hope you know hope that can use that pressure to my advantage. Com which Bob and it would do him in the past so. Leo in him in with that added pressures so I'm still filling us in a lot of -- and in the experience on the night and been through before. On this I'm really excited. Be able to on this journey with a. Another reason I suggested that there might be less pressures because. The Giants very much wanted to keep their core intact and that meant bringing Aubrey Huff back into your point two million dollar deal he is a first baseman. He can also go out play left field -- saving and told everybody that Brandon belt it's not going to be on the big league roster unless he's ready. To play every day what are your thoughts going into spring training about maybe winning that spot the Bryant's talking about four. I mean you know lost -- -- -- bonds and that's what it is it's really exciting and I don't know how to put any other way -- -- I'm never I didn't really think I'd be in this position like I said earlier you know there's this past year in and -- -- -- bigger right now. So just in though that I have a chance they doing there may be played well enough to win a spot on the on the big league team is very exciting for me. Calmly and -- on this trying to get myself you know as prepared as I can right now so that when I go up there I'll be I'll be ready to go. Abreu and I looked at some here numbers from earlier in your career in college at Texas you're a pitcher you're an outfielder now her first baseman. Said to be a very advanced defensive first baseman. Tell me where you're most comfortable on the baseball diamond. In. I'll promise of more more comfortable every day on their first baseman has something up picked up later in my career but. And I'd like him out there and obviously sounds cliche here or whatever but is this is going to be up there. In shock of finding comfort you know among their pitching in the outfield power play at first base. -- so in August that it just gets you out there and be able to play especially on the big league club that's something that really excites me hope that. Hope it'll work out for me in the future and when I ask what. Question for Brandon. A Bryant's -- at first told us during the winter meetings that he didn't wanna put too much pressure on you but then he kept talking about in talking about -- And your name kept coming up in a sentence that included similar to Buster Posey those are some big shoes to fill this -- the reigning rookie of the year. That's why he says he doesn't wanna bring somebody up until they're absolutely ready but has been very flattering to you be mentioned in the same breath as guy like buster. It's certainly very flattering you know I can't I can't say enough of how honored I -- some I would actually say that about me. You know you know like until her body -- this this is not somewhere I'll I'll be right now. So just -- here's some money -- -- -- at some nice things about me associate things about me I'm. -- him they really give me some more confidence in him that I can't go out there and maybe one spot on the on the big league club at the same time. You know I have to the state of -- it is possible and know that anything can change and -- to go out there today find finds when respondents are gonna come easy so. I think hopefully if I can keep that in mind it'll it'll work out for the best for me. Okay LIT -- and I do have one more question for and I'm gonna put on the spot. You say you're just gonna take it one day at a time and try to make this club -- if somebody's a betting man and they need to put him back down as Brandon belt make this club out of the 2011 spring training for the Giants. You know I'll I'll ballot followed output but I'll bet that I wouldn't you know just until like mentally ready knows -- well as physically. And down. Now been preparing for this moment you know since this past year and I'm going in there with the mindset that I am gonna be able to win a spot up there and I'm will be ready to do anything to do each and every day so that the you know. If you were a betting man how is that you can bet on me to go out there and play my best every day. And dumb then to be ready from the start and hopefully you know are so it'll work out fully but it's not. You know I'll go wherever they want me to go and I'll -- as long as a woman away you know is -- they they know best for me and then what was best for me. And if you on -- when everything there that I'm ready than they think that I'm ready you know on the -- that now have a house phone with a -- at. Our brand and love the confidence and your Giants fans are gonna -- here in the you're confident. But -- chances of making the club we love the fact that you joined us in the first edition of the hot stove show thank you again for your time Brandon. Thank you very much appreciate it.
