Realize -- less than three weeks the NFL's go to training camp the Arizona Cardinals of on the NFC west the last couple years no way with a -- 97 record all the way to the Super Bowl last year they were ten and six the niners hated every day following six straight. Losing seasons there's always had a lot of losses. The niners nation to draft so badly closed the gap we welcomed in the chronicle live Matt -- -- the -- -- blog artist gave an all star recognized her -- -- panic and Nevada longtime friend nearest neighbor has not always -- howry David. Fine thank you very good to see you met a scout in the NFL and your dad Tony for many years you've been a scout in this division the change in this division for. A couple of decades starting with the niners and go to the ranch for fourteen years and most recently with the Arizona Cardinals for three years so. And last year you were not the league you kind of watched -- so wanna get your thoughts on first of all the number one loss I think in pro football this year Kurt Warner. Leaving the Arizona Cardinals Matt liner takes over you were there. When Danny Green and. -- drafted him how do you think Ken Whisenhunt -- -- play a -- is it Matt liner guy do you think. I think the jury is out I think can has never been completely confident -- Matt. In terms of preparation and that sort of -- attention to detail -- a big loss obviously that you know match. -- a lot to prove and he he has have a chance to do that that in terms as of today. Does what is it wasn't is Whisenhunt. -- have total confidence in them I'm not sure. They also brought in Derek Anderson a couple of years ago was a pro bowler and goes seven year with the Cleveland Browns saudis see that many do you think Anderson eventually takes the job from -- at some point this year. I think that was -- that's gonna have a quick trigger and I I think if things aren't going well. I think he's got knocked tennis hesitate to make that change I think what they really wanna do is they wanna get away from the passing game or not be so reliant on it. I mean I think. He wouldn't it wouldn't have the Cardinals were making that run a couple years ago is because the running game really came on in the in the post season I think that's where they have to really. -- there that you look at the image of this team with Alan Faneca coming in runner. The ball with a quarter gone now who has the best quarterback. In the NFC west director column today -- serious and -- aka -- you quoted Dave extensively to say the least you are not an Alex Smith. Fan and you weren't when he was coming out of Utah and you still are not to this day what what what what are not seeing an Alex Smith. I like Alex he's a great kid works hard he's got all the intangibles. I think he's a limited player talent wise obviously. It's not so much an indictment done that Alex is it is extreme confidence and I'm Nate Davis. And I think if they gave me that opportunity. In the rains let him go I think they've -- he could take him to where they wanna go. Alex's I think he's limited in a lot of ways you know arm accuracy and those are things and he's had ample opportunity to prove himself and. You know the jury's out but he's had a lot of time to prove that is I love Nate Davis. You know one of these that knocks on Davis and I know he felt through you know on a lot of draft boards after being projected number one pick -- first topic. Was a learning disability -- how big an issue do you think that is for a kid like Nate. -- makes its -- again once he gets that he has and he doesn't make the same mistake twice. The kid like that you have to get him on the field let them play let him run with he's gonna win games where he's he's he's a winner. He's extremely accurate makes all the plays can extend plays that's out of the pocket and I think they'd be pleasantly surprised that has handed the ball to Newman and let him go mad what what is. The niners planned for him because. Just recently Mike Singletary was very clear in saying I'm disappointed -- him he's not grasping the offensive -- Italy. As we'd like they brought in David Carr is there a plan to get him on the field at some point if Alex struggled a little right to our. I mean the plan is that Alex Smith doesn't strike or and -- and sign him you know in this is finally here that they deal. That the other plan is I think Jimmy ray Watson to compete for the backup job with David Carr. What does that mean there's there's an issue there Whitney Davis. He's not gonna fully develop. If he's doing getting number three raps so it's sort of a catch 22 they'd like to see him develop when he can't develop at the rate that he would if you were getting on the field -- -- Seattle before Arizona won two straight NFC west Seattle on this division they won the division five straight years Matt Hasselbeck to me if healthy is clearly the best quarterback. In this division but gone from Mike homer -- -- -- Jim Mora not a Pete Carroll which Jeremy Bates call the plays they've how do you see. Matt Hasselbeck running this offense and Seattle. If healthy he remains the best quarterback in division with Warner out of there now -- Hasselbeck still a lot of abilities got to stay healthy. Deion Branch just to get healthy and in terms of these other young quarterbacks in division. Hasselbeck still has a lot of ability just has to stay healthy and I think Seattle doesn't have a supporting cast around they had 45 years ago with the running attack and that sort of thing and the defense has fallen off. I think Hasselbeck can still play and play winning football. That again is supportive that's -- to be around and they had to build a couple of. They have not nice draft early -- -- free agents in the off season the Seattle let's say in the people there kind of leery of in the NFC west I think there are several years away and I think there -- several drafts like they had. This year away Earl Thomas I think is a player that everybody lights and you know why do you see him as a cornerback or safety. He's definitely a safety he's an impact guy he's -- he's a playmaker is aggressively shows up and every game. And he's definitely gonna be the impact rookie O'Connell. Was this crazy about O'Connor at the top of the first round all star form. But again -- -- Thomas will be the guy that steps in right away -- that the about the golden Tate the wide receiver your vantage -- -- -- it was a little bit between resort a place the receiver position like running back he's. He can run after the catch he's not real smooth -- fluid guy running routes is productive bit. He's low limit and I think -- he's a little bit of one of those tween or types. Finished initially when Taylor Mays plays against Seattle. And Pete Carroll I. Obviously Taylor Mays playing because he surprised you guys -- -- some of the minicamp that he was better in space most people thought he was up a box safety kind of tight hip did move well but he moved well. In space well how do you see him in the NFL box safety or -- play the deep. Medal he's definitely better off in the box he's -- -- that -- -- deep -- guy he really he had straight lines Bibi doesn't have a change of direction tight quarters. He's more height weight speed got those guys always get a little bit over hyped -- he did fall. And again now you know Pete Carroll passed him up in the first round so maybe you know something we don't know bit. He's -- I think it would disappear in certain games and he just didn't see that game in and game out consistency that -- -- Earl Thomas. Had in college he fell all the way to cover 49 when they drafted and I immediately thought that's it for Michael Lewis with a concussion problems this is the next Michael Lewis -- see that flushing out. Before they kick off I think they're so much for us at safety to learn when it comes into the -- that's very difficult to throw him in there especially eighteen with another young safety Dashon goals and no there's not one of those guys can't really just take charge. I think they have to keep Michael Lewis around. And ensor worked Taylor Mays and because. As Dave mentioned -- just a work in progress -- he's he's learning technique for the first time. Part lastly though -- senior with the longest in your career fourteen years with the range and you have some good days -- good teams there are obviously greatest show on turf from Kurt Warner was there originally and that bunch but. Sam Bradford. How do you see him making the adjustment to the NFL because at Oklahoma. He looked over the sidelines all the time and everything to be -- from there he's got to -- defense is in this league it's a whole different deal. Do you see him struggling a bit initially is especially behind that offensive. Like I will say -- best I've seen since Troy Aikman coming -- 1989. And now I think the guys are bigger more athletic version of Aikman. He's got rare accuracy is that rare arm he's had great intangibles and a guy like that as he really can't miss prospect. He'll struggle a little bit first because of the -- around like Edmonton Dallas but it was 115. I think in the end of the -- they -- a franchise quarterback and good things in -- for the saint looser because of the building but they're gonna finish -- -- -- what do you it was the NFC west a real real quickly but it's a two horse race between arizonans and San Francisco I think it's gonna go to the wire and I still get the caught a little bit of a credit the credit there than the edge. You know I think they're gonna emphasize the run more Beanie Wells and and then when they no longer Warner so again I think -- wells has a chance to lead the league in rushing. That'll come down the wire -- at the end of the day and they're both sort of night and seven type things. I would give the -- of Cardinals. At this point they've got to see again and respect your opinion and every guy's got time you wanna come and talk football at that chronicle I'm here erupt every day. And our economy in order to kind of.
