Well he's the best running back in the country can't lose this award to another running back is only a sophomore so what was your reaction at. In the arena that night inside the theater when it was announced that he did not win the award. Well I mean it's a vote you don't control you know votes and had my reaction was that Toby did everything he possibly could. To win that award. You know had the most yards the most touchdowns. Did against top ten defenses. Did it -- when teams were specifically. Game planning to stop him. So my reaction was. Really the youngster did everything he possibly could have done you can't control. Some things in and then then a -- felt like a loss is felt like you know we lost a game that he can look at yourself in the mirror you know what. What can I have done. More to. The work we have done all those things started going through my mind -- at the end of the day just you know. -- did everything he occurred in our minds he was was the best player in the country. Jim why do you think he did not win the award what was at the four losses you guys suffered this year or was it simply going to look at the geography of the voting. It seemed like there was a real bias that that people thought they SEC plays better football than the pac ten conference. I talked to some people. Who had votes and and it was it was really interesting to hear their take. Torrey Smith for example the the Ravens quarterback. You know -- as well you know. I won the award because on the best team and I was the most in -- recognizable person on on the best team in the country. So I think there's that kind of -- sentiment out there that you know who's ever the most recognizable. Guy an undefeated team. You know should win the award and all a lot of things you know the pre season hype. You know who. Who's the most name recognized person out there. So who gets the most pre season hype. Who's. Who's on the team that's the best team in the country really -- ward is who's who's had the best season. You know bad season that's that's what the the award is is supposed to be about but I think that plays a very. You know small percentage maybe 25% of who actually wins the award is what kind of season. You know that player had and and you know now he'll be an up close scene at you know over Europe over the the year long season and and aunts and see it play out -- that's kind of what I think right now I mean 25% is. It's who's getting the most pre season hype 50% is his. You know that most recognizable player on the undefeated team and about 25% up. You know actually your statistics what you did for your team and not given season. Roger showed Joe voters are not looking at what they should be looking at it -- the most outstanding player for that one. Individuals season as somebody voters it's not like they were gonna vote for a lifetime achievement award. When they were bringing Tim Tebow and and and Colt McCoy and they obviously finish below Toby but I mean you can't tell me that Toby was not the most outstanding. Reformer this year but -- Let's move I don't attack. Provide like I think you're -- -- seven to. I think you're at a -- -- Greg is you know that we need when you get into votes -- its mass voting like this you know I think some of the regions to play. Do you play into it. You know it's like well you know vote for Toby fourth if you're in the south east and he won't get any points and let you know spoke for. You know a couple guys in our region and maybe one other guy and let's let's not. You know -- somebody's the main competition. Points and it's so I mean all those things play out but you know there's there's there's a lot of lot of deserving candidates. You know certainly not saying it. That you know mark Ingram didn't deserve your quarter Ndamukong Suh didn't deserve their Tim Tebow won the greatest players in college footballer. Colt McCoy won 45 games. And you know took his team to an undefeated seasons amid all deserving candidates has got to understand -- mean. I'm a little bias I I watched Toby for for twelve games this season and think that he was the most deserving guys so. I mean there's there's a lot of good debate here I guess just. Finally. You know all I'm saying is that in our minds -- told we was that the best player deserved that award. -- should be by insurers said coach I hope you would say that it by the way he did finish second today the runner up to the AP college player of the year to sue from Nebraska but until they handle themselves beautifully all the interviews that I saw leading up to the event he was very gracefully was graceful and losing but. When you guys were alone in a head coach to running back and you're just -- quiet moment. He must've been really disappointed he didn't get that award because. It's nice to be close but thirty years from now that I can remember who finished second 2009. They're only gonna remember who won the award. But again that's the truth because I've finished third at night it is evident and nobody knows it. No nobody knows you finish third and 87 I don't know I know I think yeah. And I 86 season yeah down forgot Aybar got the year after I I did Davis I know I know that I. And you know a lot of us took it to -- harder. Then Toby showed that he took and I mean. He handled with grace. Class dignity even in even -- we've been 101. You know that's the way he's he's handled it. And I think I think mainly because. It's it's anything in sports where you can. When you can. Do your absolute best. You know give 100% to -- you're doing. You can look back on -- what you've accomplished no matter what it is an infield very good about it. Obviously it was an exciting night for the program even to be you know runner up and you would like to wanted to mandate of the first guys and -- to get in seventy but. I know it was a busy night for you because right after that you caught a flight to leave Manhattan and -- at Lawrence Kansas to become the new head coach India. Kansas Jayhawks have it. Obviously that did not happen at that have a that was that's what I read the paper that day you're going there you're gonna sign a contract will be announced on Monday but. Obviously the next day you announced extension at Stanford but. -- why. The constant rumor mills around you even when you look people right in the eye and say I love Stanford -- -- to stay at Stanford Jim why does everybody think that -- not gonna stay at Stanford. -- that that's a good question. You know I think it's and and we talked about this not with our team I think. You know the the players deserve the credit here at Stanford for. For what our team's been able to accomplish and you know simply put I mean a a rising tide lifts all ships and and you know that's that's what I attributed to Greg. I don't ask you about the quarterback Andrew Luck is I was that your game. Against Notre Dame I thought he played a brilliant game a much better game obvious that he played against. Cal the week before the big game but. That I irate that he injured his finger is not going to be inevitable goal in your bowl game where end -- the Notre Dame game did he injure his finger coach. It was a pass play midway through the fourth quarter. And don't know exactly he hit. A back of the defenders had or tree when he went to the ground. That he sustained injuries. Injury but we didn't know about until after the game in Atlanta we're talking about that off can't wear. A few minutes ago he if there's a really good passes after after the injury. But. You know there all the doctors felt that it was best to go ahead get the surgery now. Make sure that you know that Anders and have a long successful career after this. Surgery everything's progressing very well right now -- gets two pins in his. In the knuckle of his. This index finger on his throwing hand. Everything's everything's progressing very nicely to get those out to about five days before the game. Against Oklahoma and in what we'll see how it looks than in. And make an assessment as to whether he's in or out of that game so -- so he may be able to play in this game I thought I thought he was ruled out of the game he may be able to play against Oklahoma on New Year's Eve. Maybe yeah we we have we have not ruled him out of the game. Art if he does not go and you do go to -- to Pritchard in the game coach how does that change the way your offense will flow against the sooners. Court order to -- did you start the game. And and we're America we're not gonna change anything that we do we're we're appropriate players in a position to win the football game we grade. Great respect great confidence in having to Pritchard who started nineteen games here at Stanford career and you know this is. Under one big win against the USC trojans in 2007 that was that he just first game as the starting quarterback. This'll be his last and and what a fitting ending this would be. Expect him to play well we we expect to. You know put our best foot forward and compete for this -- down -- assembled now we're all remember that when a couple of years ago you guys were 41 point underdogs -- -- -- the coliseum and beat him by a point but. I talk about coach Bob stoops judge do you guys know each other at all coach stoops. We we had a chance to meet we're on the same Southwest Airlines flight then sat next to each other. I was on the recruiting trail in Houston he was making a connection in Houston. And you know talk for two hours nonstop on the way down to El Paso way and you know what are what are your gad what a class guy. I've always respected what he's done. You know from afar and and you know one of the Giants and in the coaching profession. And what he's been able to do -- Oklahoma. Has been. You know and its its its start to grow on legendary status so. You know it would and honored to compete against him and there watching his team's. Play is as we get ready for this football game you know you really after quickly is not a game were going to be able out scheme our opponent. You know we're it is yards you're gonna come grudgingly and there are strong football team they're very strong we're strong and and they're strong and a couple of areas where. We're not so strong so he notices this has been -- relentless focus and in preparation for this ball game and are part. To go down their play this game and even with the injury to Sam Bradford they're a heck of a team they got a great defense before. Let you go I'm just impressed me giggle at recruiting you fly Southwest Airlines coach I'm surprised by that. Blue collar we've got a group I know you -- as that we do I don't got a New York right in the seventy about how does that add to relive his -- -- -- the blue collar dad or your coach about what what I don't. I but I thought I was done and they didn't take me in the showers that's why I'm -- -- -- -- and manage it. You can you can eating -- showered their well I won't be in there where you I don't know you can use -- -- we are close for not -- -- coached. That if it's not it's been a great or not no we're not directly about. Great threat to watch your program grow under your tutelage you guys and Huckabee are good luck against the sooners on New Year's Eve. I appreciate him a friend -- Jim Harbaugh the head coach of the Stanford guard a lot of holly got -- a shower and bathroom talk.
