Well there's no doubt a lot of Giants are dramatically improved from last year it is their pitching last season they had a four point 318. ERA in this year they have trimmed it down at 3.5 20. The second best in all of a baseball but there was such an award in baseball as a pitching coach of the year I would nominate one -- Debris getting there is no award for that but we are gonna make your mark chronicle conversation. Subject tonight as he joins me from AT&T park -- first of all welcome to drive alive. Our -- -- you for having me. Thanks a lot better. He you've you've had a couple of good staff before -- -- giant to revamp the pitching coach dollar for ten years in order to an old friend back to back here you've finished second. In the league it. But is this top to bottom the starters and the bullpen at the best pitching staff you've had with the Giants. Well. It's it's close it's hard to judge because as we know now the -- of change. Those teams that 100 games and now we went to the World Series and yet Robb Nen and world down that bullpen -- Felix Rodriguez and some of those other folks they're pretty good and even the next year when. We lost Russ Ortiz and Levon Hernandez and we had to go Jerome Williams and -- -- and I think a little Kevin Korea. That bullpen was pretty pretty great. House afterward they're pretty damn good -- you know I like to think that. In this era with these young guys this is this time. They have a chance to be as good as anybody in the league again I don't think any of that what happened if Randy Johnson didn't start the season -- this club. Yeah me ask you about Timmy Lincecum obviously. Today your coach we don't forget about Jason Schmidt and how good he was in particular -- and 20042005. I think he was the best pitcher in baseball and Lincecum has the same. Repertoire we have -- latest as a certain rock star. Mound presence about him that I think people gravitate to but so it is Lincecum the best starting pitcher you've had as a giant their race. You have no doubt means he. Not only the strikeouts put the the walk -- strikeout ratio in the hip ratio and the way these people out there. In scoring position but. You're right it's it's hard arduous many did to he probably could've won that Cy Young I think Gagne did. Because he didn't blow -- save for about three years but. I think guy here Jason probably should want it to. But you know what they're both great and if Timmy can have ten to 1215 year career like. Jason will be very happy. And obviously Jason Schmidt is just that had good Elson say at the end of his -- we have not had -- in LA so we're all concerned about Lincecum is back. What did you notice about him last night the velocity. Look strong was he was he back to a 100% help from what you saw last night -- A 100% -- you know layman's terms but they're never really -- -- percent this time a year sometimes guys need a break through and we wanted to come of the with a back problem but. During the course of the season arms fluctuate in terms of you know when they see velocity. But. We're too worried about when they don't feel like they haven't and they come out of their delivery to go find it that's what scares you. And then. This back situation. That he had you know that's it's not -- definitely sneeze about which he didn't hurt his back but. No pun intended but -- he can be a very potentially dangerous situation for pitcher. So we we were over cautious probably but I think we did the right thing in the they pressured us hard trader he was -- -- -- weather obviously and I just wanted to see make sure he had his range of motion his lose this and his body. The way you know you normally see it then you know he's not walk around how you can't walk around with a stiff back he seemed to be. Just fine on his feet and it didn't tighten up during the game which is really great signs. Hop and then hopefully today we'll -- we get a chance to see him out here horrible evaluate how he is. They rags Randy Johnson was on the mound yesterday actually during batting practice he threw about media pitchers and he says. He's good to go what what is the plan for him and could you could you guys reinsert him in your bullpen here these final few weeks of the year. Well I think there's a good chance he will pitch out -- bullpen they won't be starting. And we don't know what's -- happen there's other things involved there's there's roster situations. -- to come back off the roster. On the rosters -- me from the sixty day and then you might you're gonna lose a player off the roster so let's delicate. And if you do it -- gets hurt right away you've lost the players to self. There's there's other situations besides getting him back right away. Now he just got on the mound yesterday and I love to watch him compete anyway but to see how he came back out after he sat down with five minutes of pits I really. The microwave stuff to improve. Because that's a good sign in terms of shoulder. Now up -- the next couple days imaginable we'll have some kind of statement for you folks there's so we'll see what happens for any situation but I I don't. I don't -- anticipated being along with this situation I think he'll be back. Probably within about a week's time. And he's done that bullpen thing before the playoffs in 9501. Of these good and it's that could be a boost -- I want to ask you about very easy. Because the first two years correct you -- all scratching our heads what has gotten into this guy said he is not letting his talent flow. What were you and Mark Gardner able to do. To help Barry Zito get back to the guy we saw dominate American League hitters for six and a half years across the bay. Well there's a lot of lot of ball. And it was not to reinvent himself but he was gonna have to. I at least Alter some things to help get free -- arm up and get his arm speed back. He built the body back up he got in terrific shape this winner so let help. And he did finish out the season strong last year so we started feeling better about his situation here. I think. -- the strength -- the whole staff I think actually took a little bit of burden off until sweet spot here and relaxed but you know like he needed some results and he he knew even though he wasn't get a huge amount of run support he was pitching winning baseball and I think he started feeding off that. And that's we've seen this whole year I think you've really seen -- I'm real consistent ball pitchers this year. And I think it bodes well for his future in future for the Giants -- There's a lot lot more involved than just a couple of minutes of talking. And he's got a big start obviously coming up tonight desperate for Barry it was getting him back to what he was capable of doing it. For Jonathan Sanchez. They challenge was completely different you had to get this guy up to major leagues -- obviously could dominate. Hitters -- lower levels overall wondering if that doesn't have the concentration level doesn't have a the fortitude to fight through the top -- -- speak to what you were able to deal with Jonathan Sanchez and I think he has arrived now rags is that. As every day rotation type pitcher for it. I think so I I. I'm not quite sure I -- humane out of -- on camera but I'm not sure he thought he was gonna be aptitude either I think in the back of his mind he always felt like could fall back can be reliever. We personally I've I want him to try to get the most out of his abilities. But if he didn't have the body strength and could make it through a full season. Wasn't able to maintain -- delivery. It was going to be a tough sell a matter -- it's still going to be tougher to do it. Around mid point actually we were in Oakland when it happened when he really decided to sit down and think about when he was gonna do this. -- -- delivery find something that was comfortable for and so we could. He can get a breaking ball that stayed in the strike zone which was. A big -- and command the fastball. And he started knew that he. He. Applied it obviously really well against San Diego and he's been pretty solid sense. And Kelly have Popeye like. What he says in between starts and when you ask them where where he comes up to -- you know I didn't do this. I didn't stay back and before it was the umpires it was the wind it was a lot of things he was grabbing onto because he didn't. Underneath it all he was he knew we wasn't quite ready to be a pitcher I think he feels like he's. He's ready for all that now and I think he will get better and better. And I think one of the main reasons this guy closest one of the best pitching coaches in baseball has been for the last ten years you can relate. To players throughout all different junctures in your career because you're experienced everything you were a reliever relating your career. You know had to find out how to find a role very at the end your career. And I go back to where they were young -- snapper comes up with the Yankees is blowing hitters away with pure hard stuff that you were an American League rookie of the year in. In 1981 had to go back to the minors would Georgia center back that next year which was incredible to me but I wanna ask -- here this -- I know you deal I wanna ask you about I don't -- for Stafford governor Madison Baumgartner. We saw briefly last week he looked pretty good it. How much time do you spend big let them with rags wanna -- noticed about him it. And how we could use another Tim he's back in the rotation it might we see Bob Garner gets some innings out of the bullpen. I think he'll. It probably have to I have sit down with cubby Bryant Fabian talk predicted grow a little bit to about. Q overall. -- there's no doubt he's a plus pitcher can help us here. But. It's it's a long season for him to for the for the first time but I think this. And essentially get up here you kind of get this extra adrenaline that -- you pick up and the the big thing for me is. Now that he's here until he's gonna go back rotation I want him to stay ready every day like he's gonna. Start -- ball game and I want him to be ready in case something happens one of these starters early in the game. So we probably will see Madison in that situation and if it Jeremy Affeldt is it's safe it's reported their own maybe runs -- -- get up and he's still young pitchers who we might use some -- and get out of lefty or two. So we know we get loose pretty quickly but we won't take advantage of that too much we know he's got a young arm. We know he's willing but we still also have to have our heads examined -- we have we push your kid too -- -- he's not ready for. Rags today is it conceivable he could be your rotation at the start of next year he began the year and a ball. Went to double -- he's not pitched in AAA ball is it possible that next year he knows what you're starting five to start the season. Bob innings and these days anything can happen doesn't matter -- DH I mean. Mac Cain Sanchez is -- -- heads Donnan and but now we're different looking club now and you're you're starting look at. Having to be -- championship clubs and winning ball games and self. Rallying worried about whether or not the kids ready we have to win two and has. You can't throw away games earlier I don't mean it. Does not just about Madison will be about any young pitcher that comes up now it's a different situation that I was 34 years ago. But the way he's improved each year. This level starts to get a little different now breaking ball on the team just have to come and play you have to face teams over and over and over and over again so those are adjustment periods. But I'm sure to be sometime soon. Guard -- thank you so much for your time keep it up pitching staff is doing great this season. Thanks pop to the talked it.
