They're -- you know certainly three. Three. Venues that that so there was mutual interest. They they all had to positive different positive factors. But certainly I think AT&T. In the end didn't in terms of proximity it is to campus ease of transportation. The fabulous facility the opportunity. Four for our fans to come into the city. The amenities that at the ballpark. All of that so really in the end made HTTP. Clear choice Santa Barbara back had made a chance telling us why AT&T park was chosen as the temporary home of the Bears over the Oakland coliseum in candlestick park this is 2011. Folks in the a lot of people think its next year the Bears are gonna play. At memorial stadium next year but we're talking about as the twenty. Eleven season Greg Papa rejoined by poverty -- from the -- they we bring in the head coach the Bears. Jeff Sheppard tell me about your experiences of playing the 2000 they emerald bowl. When it was not in the emerald bowl then overt AT&T and you beat Miami. Overall you do you like the facility there was -- -- was -- yeah it was great you know there there were some challenges there as far as being the same sideline and that type of thing but. That's been rectified with our new set up. But every fan I talked to left that football game really enjoyed this setting the environment and and really it was a great home crowd force in the game so they're gonna change the way the field is angled for you guys will be from the first baseline to left center now. Is that basically the way that's a football fields that are run a different direction now. So you don't have that space problem they had during the memorable nor do it will be the same as I've walked that field and and we went out there in their grounds guy was off from the work with and we moved about seven feet toward the third base line. And which really brought the left field gate in the play you know because the gate can be open and so. As a run into the end zone there's more space in the infield that also works well how weird was it to coach opposite sideline as the Miami Hurricanes I was there in Florida State played UCLA and I was literally on the sidelines standing right next to Bobby Bowden. Who was like got his own fifteen yard line and he used to being in the middle of the field right for your offense. Was it tough to coach the game when you're kind of pushed to one side it was a little bit challenging you know because the players as they came off on your end. They had to run around the back and get back to their team and so. It constant substitution issues and one time we called a timeout and we had that. Run all the way from our end out of the three yard line -- have time to get there so it does cause some you know some some issues there that if you're not used to it. What the reasons. That that ANC was chosen and teaching is by far the smallest of the three venues candlestick was a little too far away at it from Berkeley. In Oakland much figures so leaving the seating capacity going -- to 45000 when you're 38000. Season tickets -- -- gonna make it difficult to accommodate your fan base. Well you know I I think the best way to go about that it is to get your your season tickets for 2010 and that's gonna. Guarantee a place in 2011 season I had -- teensy -- You know that the fan base I think to to make it. Make you really tight really loud you know home field advantage finger right on top it's a great environment to play football. You know the experience against University of Miami a couple of years ago our fans are really into it you know and that it's gonna have the club seating feel. That we're gonna have a mobile and the new memorial stadium. Schedule wise coach who are some of the that the non conference teams and to become an -- that the defense can really look forward to the senior for that one season and AT&T. Well we're gonna have. Were playing Colorado. This year at home and then. We're gonna have. We're gonna. Have I think it's that's the -- following you're gonna have Ohio State don't know exactly who's on our schedule or who the home games are that -- yet. But I do know that were working on a deal play Fresno state. Indy. In an arena not probably not an AT&T. But but somewhere where. All the fans for Fresno from cal can get there and and so neutral site we're gonna try to get that done for that year as far as -- conference Oregon State on September the 24 Washington State on October the fifteenth. Arizona on October the twenty ninth in USC with Lane Kiffin will come in on November the trusting -- gonna play Ohio State. Yeah -- in 2011. In twin. The twelfth twelfth hustle back back and memorial stadium absolutely -- so. How. How does it affect recruiting it does it help you at all says it to say that you know -- come join us that needed him -- your freshman year he gonna play. It's San Francisco California as opposed to Berkeley Hopkins used to use this as an advantage for the one year as far as bringing young men and your program well I'm I'm not so sure that that's gonna create a big advantage force in recruiting because. But what word does create advantages knowing their memorial stadium has been renovated and -- what it looks like now on with the new high performance that are going on right now it's. It's it's it looks great a lot of momentum going and that's the big difference in recruiting right there and where the players are gonna train every single day. And and then obviously when we have -- to done to get back for 2012 that's where they're -- -- wells. -- we have visited with you and a while since the NFL draft has come and gone and for the first time since Kyle bowler went to Baltimore rod wanna not be awesome I went to the Raiders. Later that year you had not one but two. First round draft picks Tyson Ali while -- He kind of surprised a lot of people that he was chosen so high go to Jack Del Rio Jacksonville it. At number Chad were you surprised he went that hired you get a five from a from Jack that he may take an -- No I was I was surprised he went that high yeah I knew he was moving up the -- really quickly and I thought he was going to be early second round late first round guy. It and I think if you would ask our whole team you know who's gonna go first it would -- probably job had to go because he had the most attention but. I'm so happy for Tyson he really deserves it and -- you have to take your hat off to Jack's they really did their homework on Tyson. And he's a guy who complain inside form he's big he's physical he can run. Very tough very competitive. And so he's -- guy's gonna have a great career and so I wish him well he comes for pretty tough background he has a wife and two children so. Very very happy for -- Joba goes to Detroit at number thirty next he traded up at the Vikings to to get them their number one running back last year's you know Le Kevin Smith as torn as interior cruciate ligament so we'll see. They used to they have a lot of young excited personnel in Detroit he could be. He can be part of something they're they're building that's going to be special I think so you know I think when they saw a job -- you know I I heard the coach talk about that. You know that's what he does for kicks is watching Joba Tyler came -- -- a and that's pretty easy to do you know we can it is something else job at some special as we all know. But he's a -- he can do so many things he can he can run between the tackles he can get on the priority can catch a ball a back field. You can point them out as a receiver he can run -- like receiver has great hands. To catch a ball all different levels so he's a big time playmaker I think he's going to be great great play in the NFL. He's exciting to watch an usher as exciting as coach Schwartz articulated it. But he is pretty exciting to watch but. Again they're gonna move to AT&T park for 2011. I don't wanna get your thoughts on the coming season. Which one to ten season will begin for you on September the fourth against UC Davis and the Colorado will be coming in a very tough game of the week to that you begin conference play on the 25 against Arizona. The quarterback. I gotta go right they're the quarterback was here. Pedigree. Kevin Riley closely Brock mansion where are they after spring ball going into the -- -- -- did a great job -- spring practice I think coming out of it Kevin's still has lead because of his experience and he did a great job there. And you and you could tell he's kind of settled into that role you know he's been at the -- -- at the top lefty thing was as consistent as he needs to be so we caught some -- I think he's leveled off he's had he has it in perspective and so. There's a nice job he's a great leader for the team both Sweeney right there it is right now very very competitive for the job. And so we'll see how they go through this summer. And then as we get in the fall camp and then once once we teed up against Davis we'll see who takes it over that's exciting time in Berkeley that you make the -- the golden age of Berkeley athletics at least coaching wise. I'm a great friend with Mike Montgomery at Santa Barbara had a great drive bringing Mike over. Already having you on staff and I I do wanna tell our audience about an event coming up over eighteen T park -- jewel in the ninth the 2010 coaches tour. 538. At at the ballpark and I don't coach Montgomery going to be -- you're gonna be there talk about that night a little -- -- -- talk about your relationship with Mike Montgomery if you got a chance -- -- -- Absolutely yeah we've done this coaches to refer. Couple years now and it's great to get out and and spent some time with him because during the year you really don't you know I'm so busy he's busy. He did a phenomenal job. When the pac ten championship this last year and I'm looking for -- more time with them we get hit the golf ball around every now and then so that's that's kind of fun to be competitive that way but. The coaches to -- on June ninth and all the coaches from Keller really going to be either so it's a great time to get out meet the people. Kind of like shake hands and and visit with a little bit besides his -- in the football thing -- get it to us that's quality time with them and also take a tour AT&T park sounds like fun Mike agreed to united games together very dry sense of humor. Local hosting here in well he he he doesn't quite a video we probably a lot of golf course that there's a straight guy and the funny guy and you try to get out of the straight guy and he gets the best of that no question that are both highly successful course thank you so much for your time to look forward to 2010 and also come and into the city and 2011 great things -- I chipped in for the head coach they -- Bear's gonna get some tiger -- -- live.
