Matt and Mindi break down the 49ers' big road win over the previously undefeated Lions.
Transcript
Cameo coming back here at Ford Field where the 49ers in the Detroit Lions now both five and one 49ers with the upset win. To get their fourth win in a row Matt and more importantly their third win on the road and it was ugly -- overcame penalties and turnovers. And really just mistake filled football to grab this one and that means quite a bit. It does mean when you look at just the first three offensive plays at the foreigners have in this game. -- Joseph Staley doesn't get get out of his stance and there's a sack fumble He had two false start penalties at that point. Everybody's gone why why did bring the speakers and for the week of practice it was so loud here today players are timeout. It's loud as they've ever heard any NFL stadium including up in Seattle where they were talking about that being allowed us but. Three -- hung in there. It was a pretty. But man was ineffective and I think they got under the -- skin a little bit it's. Yeah definitely we'll talk about that just a moment I think what kept them the 49ers and say definitely the defense forcing the Lions and several three counts as well as an eight punts. And. Just great sacks by the rookie all the Smith He continues to perform and then obviously veterans on the defense doing it as well you know the veterans -- -- -- I think we're sort of maybe take them for granted a little bit and and that's OK let's go ahead and do -- again but predicting you called a great game. -- in Smith in Chris Colfer. They stepped up huge culvert covering Calvin Johnson one on one -- -- -- -- had a great game all the Smith had to play a lot more. Parys Haralson has a hamstring injury had a hamstring injury didn't play much in a play at all in the second half. All the Smith got out there He said it felt very strange playing outside linebacker because he's pretty much has been out hand in this on the ground and go get the quarterback kind of guy but He came up with a sack. Came with a huge the safety I mean He came up with -- another huge sack and Colbert. You think that the lines a little looked at data said 29 he's a rookie. Calvin Johnson go have a field day. Calvin Johnson but at some good numbers. But the 49ers. Did a very good job of limiting the damage with him you have to talk about Patrick Willis and Navarro Bowman that Patrick Willis I'm Brandon Pettigrew the big tight end. Three times they went to Pettigrew in the middle of the end zone. And He did get one touchdown pass and I receptions carry over Patrick Willis that that was another rematch at that worked in 49ers favor as well it was in a lot of times. That the Lions use. Pettigrew as their running game. Really I mean sort of those check down the -- underneath passes while. Three wide or running intermediate and deep routes 49ers and He did the game plan. Was solid. Offensively they they struggled sometimes -- you know defensively the game plan a solid. Offensively. They made the plays when they needed it including the big fourth and goal late in the game and Alex Smith -- passes were. You know up and down and that He was in his most accurate game when He had to. Against the right defensive front Delanie Walker in. And Crabtree running that sort of a combination routes slant to Delanie Walker. And He did a great job of keeping his in the off the ground and getting into the into a lot of the replays a lot of challenges getting to the forty hours away. Well now one of. Did the visual evidence was there that you did get into the end zone for the game winning touchdown you know one thing about the 49ers offense not to be overlooked you didn't hear much about -- can see his name was not called allotment -- a press box. For tackles -- and sacks Alex Smith sacked twice. And I thought really that was important to him that was important because when you look at it I mean who would have thought Alex Smith special after the first snap of the game Alex Smith sacked twice in this game. Matthew Stafford. -- five times that is huge. Adam Snyder He had a stinger so China Rochelle stepped in let's -- challenge some props and he's a guy that everybody's quick so like say. You know -- -- get him out -- here the teams better without him in there an outsider has played very well but child wish all stepped up and He is stuff hold next man up. I mean think about it tanking and had two huge catches at the end the first half that helped set up that 55 yard. Field goal -- gallery -- all that you hold her -- When. Shawntae Spencer was banged up a little -- He stepped in and now it's his job and they've had so many contributions from guys that you wouldn't expect to have contributions so. Just another solid. Jim Harbaugh type -- win for the 49ers. We did get contributions mean 49ers have players you do expect with Frank Gore is third straight game with more than hundred yards rushing had a big 55 yard run and 47 yard rent. An emotional when He conceded He was tight. Five lead changes between these two teams with the 49ers finally scoring ten points than a minute in the fourth quarter -- that we forget. And afterward you can see that emotion on Jim Harbaugh I carried it. With the team as they left the field as well you. Can you know what I think this dates back to 2005. I think when Jim Schwartz thought He had the 49ers head coaching job He did not get to job. Mike Nolan -- I think this is a game that Jim Schwartz says OK I'm now head coach. The four national hired me I'm gonna show them I'm gonna have my team goes six and oh and their teams get all the forwards -- there was a play. Mean when Jim Harbaugh threw the flag. And Jim Schwartz is on the sideline going you don't know the rules Harbaugh so I think there's something there these are two very emotional coaches and those emotions spilled over. Jim Harbaugh sort of funny ease of the ripped a page from. From Mike Singletary is playbook He said that's on me that hard handshake that's on me -- the 49ers Jim -- they're not here to make friends you know he'd ask Jim -- -- care Jim Schwartz license and I think He was sort of needling him a little bit and his press conference -- and Jim Harbaugh was very lighthearted NC yeah I think I shook his hand too hard so -- If these teams meet again. And let's face it it's not it's a possibility because I believe both of these teams will be in the playoffs and -- they could meet eat in the playoffs if they do. While I want I want to either Mary had the fire absolutely yes and Jim Harbaugh I think that matchup so interesting because offensive minded head case gym shorts. A defense of coordinator did very very well at Tennessee before He got the job here. So is adjusting to see that dynamic offense vs defense yeah absolutely and you know again it wasn't it wasn't pretty. But He sure was effective and 49ers now -- headed to the bye week at five and wine. In complete control of the NFC west and I think there. I think they're building something -- now they have to start looking at and other things you don't have to start looking at. You know just piling win after win after win with this game here today. Third -- three you know on the road to start a season for the first time since 1992. Now when you look at the schedule it used to be you look at the schedule and you don't ma'am what teams can they possibly win on the schedule. Now when you look at the schedule -- what. You know -- Thomas in their favor. Yes and right and -- but now you look at the schedule and you go you know like they can win that game they can win that game and there's a lot of games on the schedule where you look at you go. He a lot of injuries say they should win that game and a lot of other injury go wow they could easily win that game.
