11.24: SF/BAL postgame -- Matt & Mindi
There's a lot to discuss after the 49ers' loss to Baltimore; Matt Maiocco and Mindi Bach take the first crack from inside the Ravens' stadium, running through the key storylines to glean from Week 11.
Matt -- dominion knocked 49ers -- -- -- nine and see you after the horrible but this is the game that featured two very strong defense is that's what everyone expected and -- what can you say 49ers -- nine sacks. Alex Smith today they have problems just were not able to overcome their mistakes DC horrible are horrible. That's. What the -- offense was nine sacks they don't have that many sacks haven't given up seven sacks and thirteen years 96 yards of net passing. He was a very bad day for the offense and also not a real great for -- for the defense because on third downs when they needed to get off the field they weren't able to do that so. The with the Ravens picked up six out of 93 down attempts. In the second half and either I think there -- six for six kind of passing the ball and so what they did was they -- get pressure on it. But Joseph Flacco would what you saw was Alex Smith running for his life always under pressure probably sometimes not getting rid of the ball on time and Joseph Flacco the whole Lotta time to throw. In making the mistakes that they were unable to overcome in the first half really affected them in the second half because twice the Ravens. Offense got down 49ers red zone and twice before in your defense held them to just field goals and nine touchdowns. But then I was at seven yard touchdown pass that was called back to really get open things up. Where the momentum shifted the players said absolutely you can just see the passing game for the 49ers on -- win mean taking out -- sales and then this is a struggle started in the third quarter. I think there is some fatigue there in the of course nobody's gonna say. -- know is gonna make excuses but there is fatigue when you continue to put your defense and that kind of situation and when the offense makes a play. And it's taken away and oddly enough I'm watching them play. That the penalty was called up Frank Gore for an illegal chop block but I -- his cut block was perfectly legal or wasn't it was only after he made contact. That child Rashard got his hands on Pollard. Therefore you can't have that high low action and Jim Harbaugh -- had a lot of issues with the 49ers with the refereeing in the forty -- games this season said now that was a good call so. And that the Terrell brown. Interception dollars and another big play. That was called back. Ended up being a fifty yard pass interference penalty again putting their defense in a bind the defense held them to only field goal but just time and time again. The forty Bears defense is in very difficult situations because the offense wasn't movement. And then in the third quarter the 49ers offense holding the ball for seven and a half minutes. They were able to finally come up with a field goal fair bit. Once again the defense like we mentioned Joseph Flacco that's when he started his third -- you know his third down terror when he was able to really. Complete all of those passes and get things going in like Alex Smith said after the game with a short week you think physically yes may retire but mentally I think we just. Didn't have the answers we didn't have time to prepare they had a -- last because on Wednesday they were flying all the Ravens were home game plan. Yeah well they got beat by better teams in maybe the Ravens are a better team this early tonight you know audible in the long haul -- but certainly tonight they were a better team and they. Really beat up on the 49ers on both sides of the ball and let's remember the Ravens didn't even have the capacity as a player Ray Lewis was not on the field. Out with a toe injury the 49ers. You in the foreigners had one injury that really affected them and that was when Adam Snyder left the game the hamstring injury. Charl wrist shot came and remember shall result started the season. As the starting right guard. He was removed from the -- for Adam Snyder the line plate picked up. Coincidentally or not right around that time and today the offensive line reverted back to to the way it looked. For the first couple games of the season when they're giving up sacks and play -- and they couldn't establish any kind of running game. That's what the 49ers offense looked like. Thursday and Baltimore's they looked like. They are playing in the first couple games of the season and it also without Bruce Miller in an area as a rookie he's been very -- and pass blocking situations I had a chance to speak to him before the game he said it was a Sunday game he believes he would have a place feels fine. But with the short time between games are gonna hold him out but he'll be back next week. How much it affects you think his last time as well. I'm sure did I mean Bruce's that he won the starting job you know when when Moran Norris was out the Browns coaching staff decided that Bruce Miller. Was the better fullback between he and -- -- certainly does have a lot more versatility. Anytime Moran Norris is on the field you know. He's not going to be going out for any passes duties and yeah he's he's not gonna touch the ball he's a bumper to lead blocker for Frank Gore. You know I -- I had an issue with just the way the -- rotated there at the wide receivers I act and I think. And good teams have two wide receivers in the go with them. The 49ers are still trying to figure out who their receivers are they know Michael Crabtree is a player. Braylon Edwards whether it's physical or was it. I mean he hasn't done any thing and take in actually saw more playing time in two wide receiver sets. That Braylon Edwards so there's a guy that -- -- -- give him rise or else. The struggles might continue because I I really believe -- Alex Smith about this after the game does that hurt you guys getting in a rhythm because you don't know. From played a plate and your receivers are going to be out there on the field and he said well the thing that hurt us. There it kept us from getting in rhythm wasn't we were battle on first and second downs and even worse on third down cant argue with that. It's really hard to make a play when you're on your backside -- to pick her game. -- -- still nine into the players say they don't like the Los that this is a different type of feeling after this loss when -- nine to. Now they have a long week of rest in the east and it's something that you really bode well for them his -- physical team like this especially in the post season because they're just gonna see more that. Yeah they are enacting what this does it also shows you that you know it's a different -- games on the road and the 49ers they need. To wrap up that first round -- they need to have a home game. In the end. You know -- they can get past that candlestick. They will have a home game bonus and a first round -- as one of the top two seeds. They've -- two games behind Green Day now in the hunt for. Home field advantage in the NFC playoffs so that's that's slipping away. But they got a stave off the Saints and and keep that first round bye because this is a team. That doesn't rotate a lot of guys on defense. And they need to be healthy they need to be fresh and I saw. Justice Smith races -- for about the first time this year saying he was tired so. The foreigners. They have an opportunity with so many NFC -- games to get that first round. There will be important all right so we. Now I actually had a long week between games 49ers once again nine Q Matt I'll be back. At forty hours of practice they have the weekend off and they'll be back to work on Tuesday but do you also be working and Darren hasn't he recognizes hope I hope our families save some Turkey for us and them and you know. Are -- not having these TV for the 49ers -- this day and we certainly have that you yours at a very -- day.
