Transcript
Welcome back to -- chronicle live after a conversation. With Mark Jackson we have Marc Spears here from Yahoo! Sports -- regular contributor to chronicle live and we have a the hall of Famer the great Peter vesey. I've ever interviewing for the job -- NBC years ago I didn't get at bats he got it you became a star in an alcohol offense -- -- -- at the -- I was a long time ago and I've got 1999. Yeah so. Mark Jackson just a couple of years in the NBA Peter at that time he was a rookie in 87 you've covered his career obviously at the beginning and later. When he went to Indiana throughout all the different spots stops to get did you ever think what he watching him play that one day he would be a head coach of the NBA I think -- -- it. You knew anything about what he was doing out there he was a coach on the floor so there was never any doubt in. The only times that he's applied for jobs -- interviews for jobs. And and people say that while he's never been a head coach at any level he's never been an assistant any levels are you serious. As a leader on the floor. Or what eighteen years spend more on more minutes on the floor than any head coach in the history of the game. And this guy doesn't know what he's doing you don't need the extra. It did they just look back if they -- -- look -- he had the extra -- they do is look back and see how many coaches became head coaches. -- without any experience I mean the old days that's the way it was done they've -- bush or Lenny Wilkens you know date now is Bill Russell on and on and on. And the most recent one of course was they'll make growing -- and. And -- Doc Rivers. And if they all had mixed results except for doc. When he's never coached anywhere except his son's -- you achieve it. Many years ago just the mechanics of running a game I always going to be able to get the team into the sets and everything but the functionality. Of a team that timeouts on the how to run the game is there going to be some on the job learning from Mark Jackson ran away mark. We'll have one thing is. The players were lost especially this summer with the exception of this team everybody could look at some tape of a new coaches and know what they're gonna run with -- do do. And I talked to step Curtis summary is like. It worked out in Vegas that week we know what to do other than we -- -- to play defense so they'll be anxious to see what his style is. We definitely know his defensive minded you know that I'm already during the scrimmage about defense so. I'm curious to what Seattle -- kind of sensitive this or that the others but I guess coming up Saturday won't will nor allow more what to style will be. You know you know as soon it if you -- play Smart. I -- I play unselfishly Bryant and and you play hard that -- really what else is that the game. And he -- the men all of those three things so the game's all about talent. But it's also a good thing about meshing of that talent that. And he'll have no problem meshing of that talent getting their attention keeping it. You know we -- need more talent. Theaters here to cover the story for Mark Jackson for the New York Post -- going to be here all week obviously -- treat -- on the West Coast of being a New York Q how big of a story. Is this in New York to the Mark Jackson coaching the Warriors Peter. Ron it is as close as I am with him in and we believe me we've -- the majors flare ups over the years. But it wasn't me to decide with an idea of my editors that I want to come out there and and spend the week for them and we'll do is big features so. I think I think he believes is a lot of interest that people care about and you know he came that close again -- knicks' job. And as far as I know. The Knicks had committed to him for that job and then Mike and Tony decided not to go to Chicago. And was -- itself to -- -- wolves made a switch at that last second he could have been there all his time and and the Knicks would have had an actual. Coach just I don't know that and coach at vintage Peter grassy areas chronicle live we are gonna hear from Monta Ellis coming up for the moment we saw coach Jackson. Actually get on the floor a moment ago here and get done some of the drills is that I think the key to his success this year he's gonna get along with staff fine and obviously David Lee. Reaching Monta Ellis getting the most out of him is that the TD they don't. The only Q although the other guys -- my guys and easy going guys Monta is a star this team. You know with all due respect to -- this -- -- to his team and he's got the ones -- -- the personality. Into -- I think is not afraid to say any thing. So his name's been in trade rumors lately even though I don't think he's really worried about that but to me yes. That is the only relationship I'm worried about CMS on this team is the amount. And are rumors that. And remove all of the talk you know gone about it joke hey this through through his career okay nations and okay. He easily could have been part of the crystal ball. Your exchange. Or Memphis or. Don't have a last month say about that you have fabulous feature article about -- last year first time you -- -- was just a little while ago I was a little while ago I I told him new and I and we shook hands that. He's the only player in my my history of covering. Professional sports. And that goes 45 years so I hate to say. That that opened up to me on the telephone. -- out of seven knowing each and I was astounded then I'm still I'm that I love -- be known. Loves speaking to Roman you know you'd you'd get an interview like that -- is somebody so honest review that you root for them and I do root for certain players. I really get certain players. How you do yeah it's really good as any writers.
