Former president but the 49ers kind of policy who remembers the very first one and the catch when you beat Dallas finally but. -- championships. Sunday it's unlike any other playoff game it's also unlike the Super Bowl -- give our audience it has spanned fifteen years. Since we've had one of these describe what it's like -- championship Sunday in some ways and what I'm an -- Akron right now. Championship Sunday's that -- that this agreement because you're coming up to the the ultimate contest within your conference. And you know if you get through that game. You're gonna you you have the kind of team you have the kind of coaching staff you have what it takes to get you over the last game of the year when the suitable. And I'll never forget the first of -- 1982. And I'm in the press box. Dwight Clark catches that ball that Joseph Montana. Contrary to what everybody says is not throwing the way he's throwing with with -- strategic. Pinpoint accuracy -- and a -- And there was a young woman there. Who popped. A champagne. And started pouring right when he caught it right when he. Weeks -- and we very nicely said when valiantly. You don't do that until the game's over theirs and so there was extra point and then if you and troopers and almost -- -- what if she was ball and she was. She was so distraught. When when the situation started looking like we were in trouble. That I -- make up everything was all over her face we we we took good care of her up up up and thank opposite pillars that took care of. Eric Wright wouldn't know until the the second Dennis -- ultimately Eric writers say the touch that I feel -- in Canada and as that can -- it would say Eric Wright should have saved the touchdown he let him -- I think that's exactly right. I say got a great history just in the title game but that rivalry you know against Bill Parcells of the New York football Giants is that so many great matchups this is gonna be the eighth time. -- in the post season and I wanna ask you about some of the more bitter defeats we -- celebrate the great championships but you had. I think still your most difficult losses at the hands of the New York football Giants to the changed. Joseph Montana's career here starting with a hit that Jim -- late autumn at the meadowlands in the -- that was intercepted by. -- Taylor that was a humbling day I know for -- back in January of 87. Was this thing impetus this hit that he took the Jim -- to go to Ron Amadon that it's such. An offseason term I think it wise I think it showed a certain vulnerability in terms of what we were doing and show -- what could happen. With one hit. I also feel that it really shook the organization tremendously. And -- department was very upset I mean very upset on a personal basis because it was so close to -- And very upset from professional standpoint because Joseph was the iconic leader of the team on the field. And and and Walsh really felt a desperate need. To move out and secure our position and not only secure position for the present. But for the future. And the irony is Jim -- became a niners and he was a fun -- -- -- -- came on board. And if we had a lot of fun with the recent week we can't put your locker to close the Joes -- -- that you may not be invited to -- for dinner but don't take this personally and but Bert Bert was obviously was -- a productive feature on the field but he was also a great guys and block. And then -- there was a big hit obviously but when I think for the niners and Giants -- think of it at that Leonard Marshall. Laid on Joseph late in that game when he rolls ought to his right the traffic clears a little bit east this pauses for a moment and Marshall. With a full blind side blast right into his back. And this would be the last game that Joseph would ever start with the 49ers you would come back and cameo on a Monday night later. So Ron Amadon -- brought Amanda after the Jim Byrd hit was it effectively the end of Joseph as a -- when he got hurt by Leonard Marshall Herman. I think it was. And although I don't think we recognize that as such and if you do if you have seen Joseph coming off the field you know he brokers thing. I don't know if you realize that or not but one Leonard Marshall get him he basically broke his hand. I think Joseph still wanted to go back out there. And but the rumor has it somebody said on assembly and do throw with the left hand and you know I just yeah and it's Steve young's moving that team down the field. And then of course we had -- fortunate. Collision resulted in the -- -- -- and then. Those lucky Giants kicked that field goal and went on to beat the Buffalo Bill Lynch. Or Seifert came out as the honorary captain nick and I gave a nice five to the game against the New Orleans Saints but I think as much as we love George anyone you to Super Bowls. It's gonna ratchet up a little bit. On Sunday when Eddie DeBartolo. Comes back he spoke and I know you're very close to mr. -- what his thoughts are about coming back to candlestick as the honorary captain for a championship -- I will tell you this he's coming back he was kind enough to invite you alum myself to sit with him at the game. And -- so will be there with some of the game. He insisted. After. He graciously accepted the kind offer from Jed York to be the honorary captain that they not change. Any of the program any of the procedures. Don't -- your coach do anything that he hasn't done. Before to accommodate me being the captain I just wanted to show up. Because coaches serves he's very very you know -- a matter of formality. That habit. The superstitious. Sport he says. Believe me and I've had some of the most superstitious coaches in the world don't let him change anything for me. And I'll be there and he's he's hot he's really -- and this is happening in conjunction with. Him being on the short list -- he's a finalist list off how -- they can -- said this year -- I think he has a good shot. And personally inside you know I really strongly feel we should get him he changed the way the NFL ownership especially but NFL organizations to what players. And treat players and are at an approach players I think that. Bill Walsh does not become hall of -- with that Andy depart well. By his side as I don't think there's any question about it I was there. I saw behind the scenes year after year I think that he is also allow people like myself to do things at the league level that made an important. Contribution to the league level and and so in every respect and and I think his personality. And and just what he is all about the authenticity. That he brought to the ownership position of the 49ers was what's so special that he deserves it and asked Dianne Feinstein what he did for the but he in the 49ers did for the San Francisco community after having a Maris fascinated me having. The the the first as I understand the first. Gay. Public official assassinated and then the Jonestown. Tragedy and and it's that I mean it's just he's he's contributed so much it's time. And those things happen when he -- was a young man just became the owner of the team and -- what a Super -- yet so. And he's won five in total there were some rumblings a couple of years ago that he would get back into ownership I think if the -- ever sold down in Tampa. Do you see -- Eddie DeBartolo at this point in his in his life -- becoming an owner again well. I think it would be tough what he does have is a good group of guys. Business being in the Tampa area that he really likes that he enjoys working with playing with and I think that if all of a sudden he can have a team. Who would which would be -- home team. Where there'd be some home games instead of like the old days but there was -- home games. You've got on an airplane you flew wherever the team was playing because he was living in Ohio yeah I think there'd be a possibility he'd be interested in some role connected with. That kind of a situation. Right. Last time you and I even on the -- since I've not been here but last time you and I together it was you know after a tough year last year in the firing of Mike Singletary were wondering what they bring Harbaugh. And that. I and I often asked you this when you know when we're together because of how close you were to coach Walsh I was such a fan of his. What what do you think Bill Walsh would be thinking of the niners this year to have the show on man come in and follow him from Stanford. Knowing once they went six and ten last year like bill -- and -- -- thirteen and three you know vying for the NFC title game -- what do you think of his football team watching horrible coaching this year. Well first of all Bill Walsh was a big fan Jim -- us and I think Bill Walsh would really view Harbaugh as that as a very very solid. Positive addition to the 49ers but I think even Bill Walsh. Would not have predicted. This kind of success. It has been so stunning. To see with this man has done basically with the same team. That was being fielded. Save and except a couple of players -- same team that was being killed them last year I mean is this is just something that really -- should stand up and say. My god what is leadership -- and I think bill would even be. Sitting sitting with that in me and saying you know this guy exceeded all of our expectations and our expectations were high. And he exceeded what coach Walsh getting to the -- -- and they went to the first year sixth seeded become a Super Bowl champion the -- Until year three this is one of the greatest coaching jobs in the history of the league but Walsh would have admitted that that Garcia went. When I was at Cleveland three get really built the team that won five I'm not gonna ask you who's gonna win the football game we've known this I think like how how solidly when they beat the well here. My problem and that this is gonna sound crazy. That I've heard. That's the best bad weather quarterback in the National Football League mile from a statistical standpoint is eagle. And I don't know if you've heard that or not and I forgot today at at a meeting I was at. Prior to coming here places home games in the middle and I know I played a lot of bad weather so that bother you know I was wishing we'd have the same day. On Sunday that we had Saturday at beautiful sunny you know and let's play the same way we played them. But they'll find a way you know I think Harbaugh has these guys figuring it out. We'll find a way to play the way we have to play to win. And they're not playing to just look good or or or they're not playing not to lose bad they're playing to win so. I'm pretty confident we're gonna be okay and I'm pretty confident they'll go. To Indianapolis and hopefully. This team takes the field. At the Super Bowl. When they're announcing that it department was entering. The pro football and that is something that I before we'll find out if -- -- gonna go into the hall of fame committee Charles -- although Charlie Manuel can you see Charles and -- it together with only -- can get along with Charles -- the way he does and that's another example of the kind of owner either -- right. It is sick Carol enjoy the game on on Sunday until yesterday we -- thank you discovered policy the former president the San Francisco forty that is.
