Beautiful Scottsdale Stadium man what a night it is in Scottsdale Arizona gorgeous evening pitchers and catchers here Comcast sports net here. But have a lot more coming from sports that essential later -- -- right now we continue here on chronicle live presented. By Farmers Insurance a couple of days to pitchers and catchers and that means the writers bloggers and everyone else and reporters are ready to roll including. Are Giants insider CSN Bay Area dot com in your -- early thanks for joining us and Henry Schulman from the chronicle he covers the Giants on a regular basis but we just played some sound from. I think it was Brian Wilson because he was a really is a subdued guy same haircut. There was no acting no character team you were there what what did you take -- his the way he answered questions today. Yeah you know Henry and I were talking about it it was among the more subdued interviews we've had with Brian Wilson and he's not arriving to the ballpark in a different car every day this spring he's not doing flying out to see Charlie Sheen he seems like he's very focused on. Getting back to where he needs to be in and -- he he was frustrated that he wasn't able to pitch up to his expectations last year and he's hurt. He's a -- always thought he was bulletproof and and obviously he's not and you know he doesn't want these injuries to be questions that linger he wants to do it now take care of it. And become that guy that everyone can count on. How did you take it and well I mean we were talking about that we we were just talking about it with do shelter off the air. I think that. I think he's embarrassed that he could pitch the last six weeks of the season he feels he's bulletproof peace deals he's got a -- on his chest. So I think from that moment on he decided he can't be the sea captain he can't be. The guy who gets off to see Charlie Sheen in this sort of nut ball too. You know and that -- that a Taco Bell burrito the way he did on that commercial until he can. Come back and show that he's healthy and show that he's Brian Wilson again and I think we're gonna see a subdued brown was where I see a lot of jokes and things like that until. Until Lee comes back and save a few disease injury you wrote about this CSN Bay Area dot com in your blog about the Giants and and in particular about Brian Wilson. Just how hurt was he not just at the end of last year. But how -- how healthy was he throughout the entire team. Well we knew from the day he arrived at spring training -- his back wasn't looking so good remember just a year goals exactly today watching his first bullpen thinking. He's not getting any extension off the mound he's barely striding in and obviously missed a big chunk this spring training and then starts the year on the DL and he told us today pretty revealing that his elbow really bother him for most of the season wasn't just something that popped out. That day in August and Atlanta so. That was something he was dealing with and maybe the -- he aggravated that by compensating for not being able to -- extended his back so that's why he really changed up his. Workouts of the offseason less people less heavy lifting it. More sport specific exercises he said he really wants his range of motion his flexibility to be as good as they can possibly be. Because he knows he needs to have that to pitch it's not just about raw strength. Is it is his demeanor and his attitude and what he does bring off the field isn't that part of who he is on the mound -- is that something that. Does one of working to the other when he's cocky and confident that -- I don't I don't I don't think so because. -- -- the -- -- I was talking to Jeremy about. Jeremy you and Jeremy are buddies we are where else could hit Jeremy just -- -- I -- and when he first came up he was he has that -- as some amount but in the clubhouse. Brian Wilson the first time I met Brian Wilson. He was sitting by his locker room right here in Scottsdale Stadium reading the Bible. And he wasn't doing it for show I mean he genuinely was reading the Bible and he was very quiet. Confident guy and he went out and he earned himself the closers job. On here at -- geared to stop the closer job the first Major League debut when he pitched for a whole inning with -- and oblique muscle and he popped the inning before. On and he wasn't that cocky guy. I'm Dan and I mean I think it's I think a lot of it's an actor he's become some of that but I don't think he needs that. To save games are right -- him to stay with you because a little more attention out of the starting staff and I'm gonna go with Ryan -- song great story one of the best stories in baseball last season. And here we are just a couple of days in the pitchers and catchers this would be one of the worst starts for anybody. In spring training right now yeah I mean he he he. Hurts his back weightlifting lower back. And he he comes to camp and we talked about it than the next day he goes home sick. New words I used in my story in his whole season last year was a magic carpet ride in this year the carpet is ground can't even get it off the ground it's a little troubling because. He has something to -- still have something to prove yet to prove this wasn't an out -- that this isn't a fluke. And he worked hard this offseason because he knew there were going to be those questions one year wonder and coming like this and and no it's not even be able to pitch for two weeks. And it's a back we saw what happened with Wilson this thing is not necessarily going to be a two week thing. The east let's -- to prove he knows that luxury really upset about this. Is there are enough to Brian CB has put together let's say that and it happens on and 62 games a long time you need to have someone else -- ready to step into those roles has Brian saving. Put them right guys in place to fill a role should something go wrong -- that's the biggest question I think on this team apart from Buster Posey apart from Freddy Sanchez and Brian Wilson. We all know it's a very big question with that's not a big -- okay. Don't I don't know I just sit quiet holding the Giants -- all of our favorite in the west wind and we just wrote reeled off right or -- big question explain. And we're coming off two years there were just total it was dichotomy one year everything went right is you know in 2010 especially the second half and in 2011 everybody got hurt so. You know it they can do something in the -- didn't you know that wouldn't be so bad but. You know one big question for this team is the rotation in terms of depth organizational depth because very Zito is already relied upon to be the fifth starter and he hasn't been a reliable guy and quite awhile. And after that you've got Eric's or campus a rookie who wasn't quite ready when he came up and into the year. After that the guys being stretched out or Ramon Ortiz who hasn't pitched much in the big leagues lately. In Brian -- who used to be a Giants prospect who went to Baltimore and he's kicked around -- -- little bit but they really don't have too many other guys that they could stretch out. So I wouldn't be surprised if they're even looking at some other minor league free agents of the people it might be able to bring in camp with the Wilson going down here a while so. I also think they're two guys who probably won't make this team. Who have potential to -- give them five innings one is Guillermo Mota who. But yeah I mean he's got a rubber arm he can go out there and give you five innings we saw that with TO got hurt last year in Arizona. And I Guillermo came in and pitched what five shutout innings and whatnot and the guy you just -- on as the guest Clay Hensley. This is a guy like you mentioned there's been a starter and I think one of the reasons that he came here he told me he had other offers. Where. He might have been -- might he might be guaranteed more time in the later innings. But here I think he realizes that he could be a short guy he could be a long guy he could be a starter there's a lot of opportunity for him. While there is one guy you mention the manager and that's very Zito he's gonna have to show some thing. At some point and you also Britain at CSN Bay Area dot com something about a a delivery change or addition to the delivery is that a sign of a guy. Who's just out of options he's like a man on this or change my permanent change my delivery right well. I give Barry -- a lot of credit because he's an inquisitive guy he's always looking to try to find a way to improve and he knows. Ever since 2000 you know 4042003. When his velocity starting going down. He's had to to find new ways to -- generate momentum and -- movement and try to trick hitters it's possible to Jamie Moyer he's 49 he still. Has a lot better holy -- going well so let's go said he he's he's got a locker in the Major League clubhouse right now so it's your left handed you can you can change speeds you can last a long time and he's worked with with -- mills and -- -- with Tom house and these are two of the most technical pitching guys. We talk about pitching coaches in terms of generate momentum. So you know the fact that he's trying he's not just catching his very large paychecks. Yeah I think you got to give him credit for that know what is going to amount to will see we -- so many people have just given up on -- you know they don't even during interest in what. He can bring this one gone. But you stunning nineteen million next year he's 120 million next year so few people care so is that you generally department detainee had not yet it's a -- are active and. He's I think it can happen though this year I really didn't really I I just -- despite all this depth issue we're talking about here they are giving him. The simplest jobs they can't they're saying we want you to be our fifth starter we would like you to go out there and just pitched five innings and keep us in the game. If he gets if we get to April may June now you're shaving some dollars off the contract. You get to April may June and his contract it's now the point where I wouldn't like be the record contract ever eaten and he can't even do that. That I think they have to seriously consider just eating it moving. Speaking about pictures and contracts and know immediately everyone thinks about Tim Lincecum and with the Giants in in the future now are Matt -- what's gonna happen there. There's another guy that they have to concern themselves with it. Medicine Baumgartner. It where is he in the equation of signing pictures of your -- -- but the assuming that they would like to do this is the time that they would do it in spring training obviously Matt Cain is not yet done and not even close to being done from what I understand so. That's their priority that's where their focus is right now but up on Garner is a guy who has a zero to three east pre arbitration which means it's nice to get many. Salary that they really choose above the minimum. But if he's gonna get expensive arbitration this year continues to put up numbers and puts an important for the Giants as they -- wrap up Lincecum long term. And they know it's gonna be wildly expensive so the more cost certainty they can happen cost control people can plug in at certain salary figures. That's gonna really tell them hey look can we really afford to keep this guy in actually you know build a team around him. And they think the answer is yes but you know having a guy like -- Garner that's set salaries. Would help them do that. Essentially get it done to them Garner -- I don't think no I don't think it's essential that they get it done I mean like Katie said there's there's he still has another year. Of arbitration eligibility and you'd be if you can have a two -- situation he's under team control until. On another five seasons I think 445 seasons I got to do that quickly in -- that's okay. Jeremy so over the preakness came in and -- Garner I don't think -- Garner that type of guy having known him for awhile now that he's gonna take it personally if they don't get it done. Like to sweep. I think that. They didn't -- is such a big deal right now. That I think they're gonna do this sequentially I don't think they're gonna take on something as big as Madison Baumgartner. Eight at the same time I mean unless they are people -- -- people call up and say hey look. We -- get something done here's a framework I think you can live with let's let's see if we can get this done it in a hurry and then and it get it done.
