Raiders insider Paul Guiterrez reviews the NFL Draft
Transcript
Raiders they had themselves an NFL draft as well the first one. For both Dennis Allen and Reggie McKenzie working together and we can only say that those two are some -- -- Reggie nine when it -- in that time or got close to -- You get our constant communication on on where we thought we ought to go with the pick and who was the best player available at the end of the day. Really what we went also was. When we looked at the tape. Com what players jumped out at us -- more productive. Quality football players. And and I think every every one of the guys that we were able pick. Understood how to play the game they were tough they were Smart they were just discipline. On to play the game with instincts those are the qualities that we look for a football player. And then they've got to be a bubble certain line athletically and in all these guys work. So now we know that -- Zeller Reggie McKenzie are certainly on the same page and now you wanna know about the draft they go to CSN Bay Area dot com that's why it's my home page I read stuff like this are Raiders insider Paul Gutierrez breaks down the draft. Also has great stuff on potential undrafted free agents at the Raiders might be getting into. But right now we need to talk to Raiders football that is. Number three on our farmers top five Paul Gutierrez joining us here on chronicle live sell. Paul what stood out he used throughout the weekend of the NFL draft for the silver and black spots -- age and there are a couple of different strains the kind of were true throughout and and when it was all said and done. One was that five of the six guys have strong basketball playing backgrounds. A lot of Wellemeyer have no problem whatsoever espousing their their faith on does social media networks. And then also five of the six guys had no idea that the Raiders were even interested in them. Before getting that call to be drafted on Saturday so it's it's interesting it's it's a different era they've turned the page there. Some would say that they've joined the 21 century in the way they're drafting players. But it's definitely different. The way that the Raiders went after guys mean the receiver they got is slow for receiver but he's a good possession back. Let's talk about the faith in basketball part of things when you talk to Reggie McKenzie. Did you say are these essential when you're looking -- guys is their personal faith part of it or. Is there fact that they can play basketball is that something you look for the F fanaticism for football player but as Reggie said when he was asked about the basketball part specifically was that is just part of the scouting process of a guy. First -- what he wants guys that love football and wanna play football in our football players no doubt they have to be good at that. But if they're also good in another sport they look to see how that translates into the game of football. For -- -- they have to have some sort of a jumping ability he actually said if they're looking at baseball players that are playing football. If they're outfielders of their center field the way they tracked a fly ball. That that would translate on the field at their receiver or cornerback or a safety at deep tracking a ball the fate side he wouldn't really get. Deeply into that but he gets -- it did kind of come along with the territory if he wants high quality guys and that's not saying that every single faith based guy. Is a good guy. But it kind of leads into that direction so to speak. Paul or also trying to learn Reggie McKenzie just what he might bring. We kind of in for that he's a guy who can pick some real charms out in the middle late parts of draft so. These seem to come up with those like for instance when he got his first selection underway in the third round become not -- -- -- -- yet this was a super -- Now and that's that's part of the refreshing thing of Reggie McKenzie is is he was asked about -- and it is. Was she kind of surprised that he fell all the way to them at the end of the third round is he got does he have first round talent and Reggie just look at us that now if he was a first round pick talent. You have to dig in the first round but but he was -- with a because. That's what he had going into this draft they had the final pick of the night on Friday night. And and that's what they got he addressed the need he was on their board the best player available so they were happy with that now would would Reggie McKenzie of -- -- have a a first round pick a second round pick. Absolutely but from what they had. He was happy with without being able to choose an offensive lineman and a nasty smaller kind of guard didn't get in there and create some competition on the offensive line. All right -- spent any better part of the weekend reading all of Paul Gutierrez is updates on the Raiders on the draft in the undrafted guys who may or may not becoming of the silver and black. Paul thanks for your insights we appreciate you joining -- sun chronicle live action.
