Sabean: 'Every series you play against someone in front of you is big'
Transcript
We are chronicled conversation. Senior vice president general manager of the Giants right saving joining us here -- the program as he does every Tuesday -- thanks for doing that we're a great way to start the series isn't. Good to be the American League guys -- love night games straight on the road. Real good. Oakland series we needed except for the last game and then the -- vetoed that last night against the first place team. You know good timing to play these guys and be back in our division ball real nice start for the Giants in this little question of that and I know we're not yet at the fifty Garrett at the 50% mark of the season and I know you a lot more. Games against the Dodgers how much do you guys take a look at the standings just a test the water and see where things are. -- I think it was said aptly by one of our players you know. We did we get out of the phrase that we would beat up now there are a little bit beat up and and they stumbled. And we have to take advantage though we know that every series you play against somebody in front of you is big so. It's really not about to date it's about who the opponent is and our guys are aware of that. Not that their next season you know watching the standings from day to day but. They know the big series and they know what they need to do you know these games argument you Barry Zito the job that he did. In game one of the series for the previous three starts for very. A lot of pundits would say well those were very solid starts but very actually said he felt comfortable with the way. He threw the ball in those three starts it just happens that made the numbers didn't fall in his favor as you watch Barry Zito. Has he been consistent all the way through. Into last night starts. Well -- I'd say reasonably so that the three starts prior to this when he was a little bit fallible. I think a lot of times its simplest you know first pitch strikes first batter routes. What you can do to get a ground ball what you can do to get a couple of them in on first and second he did last night over the he had a big league. -- a man on first and second nobody out and we were watching his pitch -- we get a reliever up. And he got out of the inning so it is about making pitches the right time and some games you don't have a chance to do that or. Maybe make some mistakes -- would like Giants jumped on the Dodgers in the first they threw for up on the board. Is there a difference in the ways seed or any pitcher will throw they have four on the board early -- relax a little bit more does it help -- guys some when he when you know you've got the big I think it's up to the individual that you would help here at home. We've got a real nice pitcher's park to pitch and you get a great home crowd so I think guys feed off that but they know that also that you know it's a long ball game. And offensively I I give our guys credit we added on to that kind of give -- -- a nice margin and -- for him to work with -- -- let's look at Tim Lincecum last start. What -- most interesting for cities are gonna find. Strikes out the side but there's some hiccups along the way how did you assess again one better away from maybe being taken out that Bruce Belichick so how do you assess his so you know I. I was really pleased effect -- texted me this is get taken out of the game. I didn't go to all gonna watch my office here in as you know that was a goofy start to that inning couple scratch hits. And you know to be down three to nothing of the bases loaded nobody else in the league get out of the inning by striking out the side. You know I think it empowered him he's talked to that point where you don't eat he had to step up he did step up. And you know it's one of those situations where it was about the control and I think Billy worked nicely with the you know Sanchez and we will see what happens in this next start and I'm sure that he gains a lot of confidence doing that on the road. Especially against the a's Bart Bryant big picture question about baseball right now we. -- our first may be big deal Kevin Youkilis going from the Red Sox at the White Sox is second openly -- do you think more deals will start to happen quicker as opposed to. Coming close of that trade deadline late July and I think that's a unique situation it was almost a deal at convenience we had a young player in middle -- coming up the Red Sox have. Literally took Youkilis -- place and he's the future and then you have a team like go to the White Sox who has had no third baseman and had no production so it was almost a perfect world situation. I don't know all the things happen on the average much like that and -- we will see as the week's mountain. Buster got the break in game one of the series do you expect a little bit more in the midway part of the season the rest that ankle he said it's been a little tender but the good thing is -- a couple things one you know now we've seen Sanchez develop as one of the better back up catchers. In the National League if not all of baseball a good start for some teams. And also we know the bus they can play first base so any data you can give him a break off his feet from you know behind the plate he can do that we also don't want to lose as bad as the fourth hitter. What -- things though is that fell just kind of come around and you know I think the nice steak for Bruce -- -- And really this coaching staff and maybe this -- team is. You know -- The longest time now we haven't had a set lineup in this kind of some comfort run -- the same guys every day that is a good conundrum to have too many good players to try to fit into the lineup. But we did see actors Sanchez catch Tim Lincecum we nobody catches -- Would you anticipate may be more of Sanchez behind the plate with -- specifically you know that's a good question I know that everybody's open mind you know how Bruce works things he's very close to his players in the -- feeds off. What he thinks he can do to make things work. And -- -- -- Timmy right and -- also is to have the best pitching staff in baseball not the National League so we're open minded -- Bryant always great catching up with the on Tuesdays and do it again next week right Zabian. Senior vice president general manager the Giants the.
