Palmer: 'We're headed in the right direction'
Transcript
Carson Palmer played ten games for the Raiders last season here's what happened in his nine starts. He won four dropped five through 400 yards more per game in the losses which is understandable since the Raiders. We're playing. From behind Carson Palmer joins us now about what with the Raiders. There -- -- new coach. New GM. What's the adjustment period -- like for you so far. Very smooth. You know with with all the turnover that's happened and and all the chaos over the last twelve months it's been it's been surprisingly smooth coach Allen and and Reggie McKenzie you come in with a plan and and they stuck to it and they've been very organized very detailed and from a player standpoint and in a coach's standpoint. That that's really what you want as they really ease the transition and and got everybody cultural so that we can really just focus on football right now. You're gonna work very closely with your offensive coordinator Greg Knapp and he's got a great pedigree as you know we work from Michael -- -- Matt Shaw also worked with your buddy Matt -- What's the relationship like there with with this quarterback and not quarterback coach but. He's got a specialty with quarterbacks but this new offensive coordinator. It's been awesome -- snap is a phenomenal coach and a great person. He's he's been around the game from all for a long time -- in San Francisco for -- Hendry years -- Steve young and seen a lot of great quarterback play and and has a lot of great coaching points and tips and reminders when you're in the huddle and and his critique of your play and and in practices is all I've had so far but I've learned a ton and and really the report they're having a whole year to play for for coach -- has. You know his experience and and the way he keeps defenses off balance is really gonna help -- out. There's bat lighter -- helpful resource because he's your old teammate in college and and he knows of course about coach now. -- Matt Maddon I've known each other for a long time and played together. Ten or eleven years ago and and he's been in in the same office -- and now and played for coach now for two years so. It's been really helpful for me just to have somebody to bounce questions off of and you know you can hear some things from as a player from coach and they don't quite set in but then when you hear. The same thing from a player sometimes it just sets in a little bit different from other -- it's actually experience a certain flavors is certain coverage and Matt Nationalists it was being green and it's been a lot of fun detective Matt. Are you Carson when you're not on the field following Darren McFadden around making sure it stays healthy and doesn't get injured because if it. Because if he's healthy I mean he's really good but the problem is he he played all seven games last. This is going to be there and here. He's worked so hard to to give back Corey is right now and he's such a dynamic football player he can play he can probably is one of the guys that to probably play any position on the field from. Receivers. Maybe not quarterback I'm not gonna give that up to him that he declared receiver tailback tight end while linebacker safety. He's so explosive and and really. So much fun to watch specially for quarterback threw him off the ball. But really excited about the your -- gonna have. Darius they were better that's a pretty good third down option for that receivers are going to be a go to guy for you this year. Darius there were expecting big big things from various. And he's drawn and believe his fourth or fifth year so he's got some years under his belt and got some experience. Got a lot of catches last year dinners mores and other big target for us and and of course Kobe forward. So word were pretty well so there's your position in and there's guys behind those guys that are just scrape and fight and it's been great competition in the receiver and try to make this team. You've always been a confident quarterback Carson when he came in last year the first game you weren't even expecting to play he said -- say you weren't ready victory into the game. Then you started some games. How important. Is the comfort level in other words how much better could you be this season than you were last season. I think probably the -- for those probably the most important thing from quarterback's standpoint. Comfortable with the guys around you and and the rhythm and timing you have with receivers cultural the playbook and protections in the running game and understanding what you're trying to do as an offense for certain defense and I'm getting there you know we were only a week in the camp we -- a long way to go we don't have another -- real -- first came from there for five days and until we play against Dallas so. We've got a long way to go and and funny at times to get more more cultural -- it's truly. -- the most important things for quarterback is being comfort comfortable. You've been in a lot of training camps Carson -- you get a sense this early on. What type of team they're gonna have and every every one of course I know says we're going to be great we're going to be competitive and we've heard all the cliches but but your veteran you've been around for a walk and can you get a sense of of what your team's going to be like. I think we're going to be great and I'm gonna say -- the you know like like you said it's easy to think that now there's there's 3132 teams saying that. But you know we've got a chance with the with the system that's installed. From the from the top down from the GM into the head coach and and as it trickles down to the coaches the players. You know we're headed in the right direction. We've got a lot of work to do and and we know that we were. Common and this year is kind of you know a team that's plan on the radar which probably a good thing for our team being young like we are. But we've got a good shot as anybody. The next thing is is just to stay healthy and and to keep grinding keep working and if there's anything I know about this new regime coach Allen and and Reggie McKenzie is they're gonna grind us they're gonna keep us working there and keep us focused. And we're going to be disciplined football teams -- some that is preached to us every single day every meeting every practice and that's what takes when this league you got to be disciplined got to work hard. Last question Carson there was a report. -- Pete Carroll. Your old coach talked -- from Seattle and said hey what about this Terrell Owens guy. And you gave him made a very solid solid reviews that trip. Deft -- first -- a couple times and you know -- have up to play with play with Terrell for a year and there was great you know he Rea. Got off got off to a hot start and and you know he had a little bit of an injury bug but he's obviously phenomenal player and he's won two or three somewhere. All timing catches and every stat you could think of from from receiver voters here. -- really enjoyed my time playing with them. He and I had a grew issue we've continue to work out and throw together in the off seasons and expect big things from him in Seattle and and you know happy that he he got back in for hopefully cup Warriors. Carson Palmer thanks very much -- product Rancho Santa Margarita high school in Orange County California Becky thanks for joining us best of luck this season. They expect from him.
