Everyone knows about the New York Yankees and everyone has an emotion about them -- California. Has had a lot of yankees over the years Joseph. In American Odyssey here is the book right here. It is a it's a wonderful book not just about sports in baseball -- thanks for joining us and let's start with what inspired you to write this story. -- what inspired me was that dad was very good friends with James Michener integrates. A -- -- lights on socket and when they would get together to tell about. Tales of their boyhood when my dad mentioned that his. Grandmother had come across the plains and Rockies in a covered -- the first artists who was in California 1857. Any told -- that his father's name was coyote any -- out cattle from Texas to Montana. Any goes to San Francisco's seals becomes the Yankee. Is the money pitcher for the Yankees with Babe Ruth Lou Gehrig you know Dickey. And any -- to Broadway star engines has stopped right there. I wanna -- shirt you know book but then -- after baseball that went on with Wilson sporting goods. And did over a 100000 -- a year for youth baseball so -- and he never got time to get together so one day I said to him listen. You know -- it's coming out here because I live on the East Coast so we punted. Into each other a lot let me write that story if not it's there but you know I can get what you have to say down on paper and that's how the book came about. Well it's interesting you could hear all these different things that he has done throughout his life. Was it a Forrest -- story or just fellas this stuff. Always an adventure was -- -- was lefty who was someone who saw these interesting angles and different people that that he just wanted to seek. I think. Lefty created a life that he wanted you know from six years of age he wanted to be in New York Yankee at that time. He. And the Pacific Coast League and they broadcast of Major League games in two. California so it's a kid growing up he had no idea -- in Major League game lies -- knew that according to the New York Times. You know the Yankees were supposed to be the best. And so he made his way back there. And then what I find thrilling about this book for the average guy on the street who made. Go through it downsizing loses loses his job when dad's arm went in 33 he didn't sit around and moan. He went with Wilson sporting goods he went down to Venezuela where he managed teams down there. He. Went to Havana with that done Havana and he'd worked with. Seeing the way it goes in in fact Sydell Castro was a university student and and he went to dad's clinics. And then you know dad. Rain around with Ernest Hemingway he always had a very -- collect it. Circle of friends you know and actually my mother being in show business -- you know they knew George Gershwin and that you Rodgers so. I would say he treated -- like he wanted and tell me about getting an audience with the Pope. That is not something that everyone from -- dale as is it yes well you know after they went when. When the winds of war -- coming through in the thirties and we're drifting toward. War which Japan. The Major League Baseball decided they would send an all America team over there and this really changed the course of baseball because with Babe -- in me. Lined up. My gosh look at this enthusiastic response. So he started Japanese Baseball activity at left and from mayor aid. And clay -- and their daughter Julia and my mom and dad and also Rose and but Cilic who started Luis phils slugger decided OK we're gonna do the world so they get into -- And the Pope not only gave them an audience he knew that the Yankees had one. And that lefty was the pitchers so you know my mom was very impressed with the Pope the opposite -- Listen to you all day long.
