Myers on Bogut: 'He's a very important cog in our machine'
Warriors GM Bob Myers on the readiness of Andrew Bogut and Stephan Curry for the start of the season.
August 1 term everyone we're one and no news -- health compared to -- who. It is I think you just that was probably your best defense of player and a key -- player yet you know what he's doing great I think he's progressing well. He was given a protocol by the -- -- Los Angeles he's been very diligent with that. And I yesterday out there is on the court he's -- in the ball so where we're purposely going slow with him because he is that important. But we hope that the next week or two he's out there playing. And some live competition. We're gonna actually let him play in the pre season when -- hundred for censure that there's no risk. But he's the he's a very important cog for us in -- machine so. We need him but he's doing is working -- companies can get that and sent you expect him to play in the regular season opener. We do. Without any. Setbacks or anything like that happening we do expect him to play but we will base it on how he feels so assuming he feels okay which he has been progressing well and feeling okay. And he would tell you -- tell you we do expect and be ready. That being said. Things can happen but but we -- him that he is Ravens 31 step curry. Says he's feeling well and and by all accounts is moving well and that what's his status. What can I can verify that I watched play yesterday so he looks good and -- he's moving well. I think the thing with -- -- it's just over time to showed that if everything's fine yield but thus far so far. Always good he was very patient as well he's -- rush things knowing that it's important be healthy for the season. But he was great having him on the floor for us he's -- difference maker and his leadership obviously playing that position is is vitally important for us. But he's fueled it further along injury and he's been cleared for all -- activities that beings that we're not gonna crush him when out of from out there and and have more than seven hours a day but he's ready to go -- that it. You're very good it sort of tapering your expectations I guess or sort of keeping them to yourself like you said you got to prove it but. You do feel that this team's going to be better this year. Yeah now again we were twenty games under 500 Macias that's not me making some balls and set the bar so high at that that he's ready but. I will tell you and Adam we feel like through the rosters improved some of our younger players are your older. We are hoping for the health of two key players that we just talked about bode very well we thought we helped ourselves in the draft. Free agency we we we add some depth which is always good Horry two games so. We do feel like we're better. Where does that end. We'll see. And and as to the expectations. Without what I said earlier and admirals and now is. Doesn't really do them for the -- for me to speculate on what we've -- we'll be I don't know I'm hopeful that'll be good but we'll see over the course the year. It's it's safe to say this to be a better team you would need to be a better defensive team it's a pretty good offensive team. But I don't think anyone would say defensively that was your strength last year yet that was nice -- it's an -- but effective I tried to soften it good effect. We were not good defensive last year. Pretty poor and in most categories bottom five penalty a lot of -- points in the -- defense -- rebounds points given up. Kind of across the board very weak defensively which I think is a recipe for. No success or lack of success so. We think we've improved -- we have to improve there forever going to be any good we have to become better defensively. We think we we have with with players we've added. Having a training camp wouldn't have won last year hopefully components of good principles. But we defensively takes effort it takes commitment and we hope that that it's going to be instilled in this with 201213. Season. You said that I guess all the players all fourteen were here for these sort of voluntary workouts except for -- so. That's a pretty good showing you must be happy with the guys that it showed up and sort of I'm not displeased but but probably wished -- was here -- Yeah you always want to entire team working out as much if those of us would have an everyday that players have the freedom. And to to be here and happy here we're happy to do with the ones that did but we're not gonna judge the players that -- the player who wasn't here. He's gonna have every opportunity competing Kampman and earn a spot in the rotation. But out records were encouraged that some camaraderie was built. Some leadership was displayed by some of the veteran players it's great for the young players to come and see. Guys that have been paid to have in the league that have achieved individual's success not being satisfied with that it's great for young players to see that and say. I can do more or this guy doesn't have to be hearings here. It's a great way to start out -- careers to see a positive culturally that. A team like this that's gone through changed that now has some real support from ownership in there and make like you said make in the right most. The history has shown that the teams that do really well a lot of times their best players are their best leaders and I asked you that you said you weren't sure it's still too early. To tell whether -- like a Bogut or step for our client would be a great leader yet. I think I would say the same thing I think. Leadership has to be proven and I think leaders win leaders find a way to win. -- somebody the wrong direction I would not qualify as being a leader. So until this team actually achieve positive results has been successful and you can point to one -- to guys -- three guys today. We won in this guy let us down that road or -- these two guys these three guys. And you can't just label somebody leader and -- -- leader. I think. Believe little leaders is an honor in a lot of ways and I think that you have to earn that right. We will have captains named. And it's up to those guys. And it's a responsibility of those guys to lead this team in the right direction and sometimes leaders are the most liked guys and then you have to be. Confrontational you have to -- conversations. In a lot of ways it's easier to follow and so I'm hoping that amongst the players and our team I do think we have them. Somebody one person to three step up and assume that role and take us in the right direction. You have to about your players you have to evaluate coaches. I -- think Mark Jackson will be an improved coach in his second year yet I do I think experience in any profession. Is very meaningful and he can't substitute anything for having been through something and for him to have been through a season. And seen a lot coming out and a lot of ways with the shortened season. Three games in a row and that -- a lot of back to backs very condensed year. He almost got -- thrown in the fire in his first year so not have a training camp to have a real off season and noticed -- probably gonna look like going into the season. It gives an advantage again going through it gives an advantage. We're confident that he'll do a great job for us and he's he's excited and not speak and quite often he he -- we've done that you do some good things in this team. You said Bobby wanna be in the discussion to this team could be competing for a championship you guys are in that discussion yet. Realistically when -- vehement disgust. Who have. You know. I think. Hopefully you know on the next. Five years at some point I mean if it happens this year that's great batter happens next here that's great but that's the goal is to go into every season. With the hopes of winning a championship if that's not true goal you shouldn't you shouldn't do it if your goals to be fifth rate they're tenth. Then you should do something else but the goal should be to win a championship and that's should be our goal but we're also gonna be realistic there were not at that place right now. We're not satisfied with that I -- that give you an answer but that's the truth of it and down. We do expect so to effort. To work. Through doing things the right way employing the right process. Who will get there putting a timeline on it and it is difficult but.
