We are joined now 12012 American League manager of the year. That's right Bob Melvin joining us are on the program and Bob as you guys prepare for a busy week. What sort of the way teams are people are viewing the athletic you guys had a fun clubhouse a great run last year. -- agents and players and people around baseball viewing the athletics right now. Well it's a good feeling that's for sure I mean we've we've made up a lot of ground here and last year certainly. Little bit against unexpected. You know amongst the baseball world for what we accomplished certainly up by us that. I think everybody you know at the end of the season goes home feels pretty good about themselves I'm seeing a lot of Oakland a's hat everywhere I go all over the country so I think. You know we we've accomplished a lot and I think you know the baseball world certainly knows Lester. NEA's have been pretty busy -- acquired Chris Young immediately and then they sign Bartolo Cologne during this stretch in Nashville how busy do you expect the athletics to be yours it's more of a meat and drink a lot of talking that goes on. You know they did she never really know I mean last year we we -- a lot of ground work and inmates who trades afterward. You know sometimes -- -- get done here and sometimes nothing gets done so. You know one thing that are you know you can expect from our front office is they're very they're gonna turn over river rock in. And look at every potential deal we may do nothing we may end up with 45 different players so you never know. -- do best we can for our team would you like to group we have right now so looks a little different going to this winter meetings than than say last year. You won't have Jonny Gomes next year he was a big piece of that clubhouse -- do you guys make up for the loss to Gomes. -- you just a you know you just move on you deal with that you wish him the best in. You know had a great year for us that you know there were waiting game is its. You know you move around a little bit you. Yeah I -- very few guys stay with one organization so we wish him the best. He's a good spot for him he had a nice contract forum in. And now you know you can't dwell on those type of things you hope that the younger younger group younger guys we have -- a little bit. Further along experience wise and and can make up for him in the clubhouse but again we wish him the best there is an important situation you guys have to address that's the shortstop position will you be in the Stephen Drew discussion. There -- shortstop right now for the gates. Well that's Stephen's decision you know he's who we we've talked to them. You know toward the end of the year -- and probably early on in the offseason right now I'm sure Ian has is Ager in a mode where they're looking for the best deal one. And probably for the -- -- a place where he can settle down for a little while so. I did they know that we want him back and I know Stevens felt like he was a good fit on our team and he was a good fit our team and hopefully that has some value. I know there's a guy that a lot of a's fans have strong feelings towards the next. Yeah and his guys important I think Brandon McCarthy who really committed to the athletics at the start of the year last year he wanted to be here and be a leader on this squad one of what are the plans for McCarthy right now. Again probably the same thing. You know I know we have talked to him some early on in. And you know once you get here you start make a few more calls. We're not really market makers we don't really set the market so I think at times we'll sit back and see where the market goes and whether or not we can afford. Somebody of his caliber so. I haven't really heard anything about teams that did have been gone back and forth with him or not but we hold out hope that potentially there's a fit with us. But again we're not really series of free agent it'll be his call. And you guys have a young enough roster that you have to make some very key important decisions and part of it is is this a young roster that's continuing to girl. What do you have to mix in some new pieces so do you believe that was lightning in a bottle last year. Or maybe these guys have enough to know that you're at the start of something that's gonna be a few years and a good run. I would say -- latter though that's that's certainly my opinion haven't done. You know we we played too well especially on a consistent basis in the second -- to think there was lightning in bottle type thing. We did create a lot of good momentum alive -- good feeling and we beat. You know prepared and thought we were gonna win each and every day that won't change going in the next year and having the success that we did this year I think we went for more confidence for the same have a group that. There we put uniforms on come February Arizona.
