Matt & Mindi: 49ers are a different team without Justin Smith
That they have coming back here on Christmas Eve of the 49ers team facility where Jim Harbaugh as press conference today after a blow out loss this capsule probably last longer -- shorter. That are -- deep right here. A CSN Bay Area calming and very grim Jim Harbaugh you could say I like the way you described an eight minutes root canal he had no it was it was difficult he certainly didn't wanna be up there. Not a good performance by Jim Harbaugh today sort of nearing what happened to the team. Sunday in Seattle where they go from -- and hot teams in the NFL and everybody's pick to win the Super Bowl to being. Wow what team with some major problems. Facing very hot Seattle team in Seattle. -- -- outclassed not coach them outplayed them on offense defense special teams and yeah and this sort of showed you in the NFL how things in flux we. Fluctuate from week to week but. The main issue I think with a four -- right now -- health concerns specifically. -- two guys that I think really standout Justin Smith boy. I knew what a difference it makes what he's not on the field and Mario Manningham and they have had Manningham for a couple weeks leading up today game but. But you -- the 49ers wide receiving corps wasn't. An area they tried to improve and I think he did a pretty good job of it but now they've lost Kyle Williams and maybe Manny Campbell find out more. As the week continues perhaps -- -- scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday night when -- think if the foreigners are optimistic about getting him back any times. All that depth of the 49ers started off at the beginning of the season is starting to pay off and we see that is very thin though right now as you mention Justin Smith. Pete Carroll -- at bats that they certainly. Got a break with Justin Smith not being out there he certainly we know how he acres -- defensive line but I don't think anybody realized. How much of an impact he has -- he's been in. Every single game for the past 185 games until this one now we see the result with him out. It's not only because Justin is gone but absolutely he just set so much up front there. And it was unbelievable to see the difference I think and we calculate seventy points. This defense allowed. He scored since Justin Smith has been out -- part of the Patriots scheme and this one against the Seahawks meaning can be detrimental he doesn't play for the 49ers during the playoff. Yeah I mean easy I mean what he does he goes and far beyond this the stat -- he doesn't have many sacks this season you know that that he has a lot of tackles for defensive lineman. But we -- with the way he attracts double teams -- keeps. Feel extra blockers off all the Smith and he keeps. Guards from getting out to that second level involvement. And Willis and he affects every level that 49ers defense from a defense of line. To the linebackers inside and outside and also the secondary. And I mean I think he. Plays a big role of -- offense too because the 49ers. Defense is so good when he's out there that there's a lot of three and outs given the ball right back to the offense can. Allows the off -- office to get in a rhythm. I mean he is. His absence was huge in that game they look like a completely different team without him on the. Field and the one thing that he does as well he's a leader on the team a veteran leader he's the one who gets the guys up. It makes them work out the offseason make sure there are focused and Donte Whitner. Alluded to that last night he said we didn't think that we were in -- mentally he really didn't think that when asked Jim Harbaugh about that he agreed. You -- all the preparation on the game planning in the world that we surprised. Or did you think your team your team wasn't there mentally they weren't mentally involved in the games. Any any -- wanna answer which I understand it I think that was a big issue here that Daunte here that they're mentally not into with a chance to clinch. -- NFC west and get that first round bye and lock up the number two seed in the conference that Jimmy was really surprising to come at this time a year. And -- we knew this is going to be a serious injury just based on the fact that the 49ers were able to. To keep the Patriots out of the end zone in the second half that game aside 28 point lead disappear in justice Smith tries he might -- elbow wrapped. Simply could not get into the game so there's clearly some structural damage to the elbow Jim Harbaugh said that he has not undergone any surgery. -- doesn't know if he'll have to after the season. I would not expect to see Justin Smith Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. Whether he's able to play in the playoffs. Before Paris or have their fingers crossed because that is. Nets that's huge and that didn't mean the difference between that team. Going far or the team really struck. One thing offensively that switch the other side of the ball Pete Carroll said it we know there is something that's been brought up before in the for the Patriots game the 49ers offense the slowest. In the league as far as into the line of scrimmage running a play we saw the philly's games we saw the timeouts to avoid a delay of games. How they rectified that and this line that was once so good at the beginning of the year I mean they need to establish Sharon is Frank Gore they're gonna come up -- defense is throwing harder. I think he -- that the offensive line you know I didn't think governing -- -- row. We -- -- no idea how the rumor holes in the run game because they never ran the ball. To -- frank -- touch the ball six times averaged four point seven yards a carry. It's interesting though he -- up at the personalities of the coaches. This is the second coach in just a few weeks and it's taken dig -- Jim Harbaugh yelled. Jeff Fisher the Rams coach said something about -- know what they're trying to accomplish on that pitch. Cap dictates that that helped the Rams score late in the game and ultimately win in overtime. And then Jim Harbaugh I'm -- -- him here and read this quote from. From Pete Carroll. They had a bit -- little bit of trouble tonight with the clock they got some delays tonight for whatever reason. They're very deliberate one of the slowest teams in terms of that tonight Koppen a couple of times so. Yeah I mean the 49ers. Always seem to take that plate clocked up to the last seconds and yesterday there to delay of games of the first half. There was the two -- now it's to prevent delay of games also in the first half. And that's an area that it's the of this late in the season. It's it's unacceptable. But when you have a new quarterback in there it's it's one of those things that you gonna have to. Live -- now. Hoping that once the playoffs began those problems disappear his. I would think at this point is that the foreigners will have to win. A road game maybe two road games to make it to where they want to make it a step further than they made it last year which is the -- -- Well if they follow the pattern that they're on right now two wins followed by tires are a lot that doesn't seem like that they would get to be where they wanna be everyone's been quick to point that out yeah. And I ended the fact of the matter is they can still and it doesn't take too many things to happen they can still be the number two seed. The same situation -- going into the playoffs last year if they beat Arizona. And then the Packers lose at Minnesota which is going to be no easy game for the Packers for -- will be that number two seed. They have to take care of business against the Cardinals and if they can't beat the Cardinals accounts that part. They've got a team with some major issues going to be -- classes can be a very short playoff stay. But that's it's interesting I think people can take it for granted to the screeners to beat the Cardinals home you certainly expect them to you see all the problems Arizona has -- -- that's has been crazy. About the NFL season now the Cardinals have something to play where they can be spoiler. In San Francisco they may not have the personnel to do it but. You just never know what's gonna happen in -- which is interesting the 49ers did it very difficult situations see out might get that. But now you Patrick Willis their fate is still in our hands but now you're leaving it up to the last minute. The guy in that means let's let's face it what of the 48 -- proving just in the last two weeks at all let's let's go even further than that. They've already they've proved that they can beat. The best teams of -- they beat the Packers in Lambeau -- the Saints were hot team and they went in there they beat the Saints. They beat the New England Patriots who are about as hot as it possibly could have been and where -- went to Gillette Stadium last week. They've also you got their butts handed to all have by the Seattle Seahawks -- they went 01 and one against the Rams this is a team that can beat any team. It's also a TV show that they can. And now with the injuries mounting anything that's gonna play a role and that game against Arizona says certainly. It came down to the wires coming down the last game they're gonna in the playoffs that it'll certainly be interesting aren't any final thoughts before we got celebrate some Christmas -- yes I do have some final thoughts thanks for asking Jerry I'm sort of stopped. You know this season. United travel every game eight road games. Home games two and -- every year as we do every year but. We I think every year we get to know a lot of the people who watches better and better and it's been a great year as far as connecting with some of these people developing. Nice work or. I've had a great time meeting. The people who who. Watch us accurately we have won her first meet ups and we decided hey let's see who wants to come meet up in Boston and we had about 20/20 five people show up. -- late from Mexico City I Carlos. And we had recent Lauren out of Nova Scotia we had other people from Montreal from Tennessee from Atlanta I mean so many great people in Maryland now this is -- man -- am all over the place so it it has been fun and we really appreciate science here on CSN Bay Area. Dot com and we wish you and your families and everybody out there and very happy holiday season.
