Myers: 'Western Conference doesn't let you off the hook'
Transcript
Every week we get a chance talk in general manager of the Golden State Warriors Bob Myers he joins us here on chronicle like the one set of numbers -- -- that stat line was. The Warriors are nine and ten against the west how concerned are you with how your team matches up against the rest of the conference to in the Wes is good what's really good confidence. We've been great against the east the west is good. -- we. We've been competitive but again we played a lot of good teams in the west as well some of those losses have been some of the better teams in the wet so. It's a battle nothings easy and every every game plays -- challenge and I think everybody in Western Conference would agree. And whoever ends up succeeding in it won't won't we won't come easy and in and especially for us I'm. We battle last night tough loss but -- In the Western Conference doesn't doesn't much off the hook ever it's just it's a constant challenge and it's it's gonna remain that way there's no night off in the Western Conference in every guys play within the conference it's evidenced from the last two ball games. A blowout in LA against the clips you lose at home to the Memphis Grizzlies. Is this just a blip on the radar or is this team maybe not stacked up against the top tier teams you know I think I think we competed. Clippers was tough I think they just came out and in the second game we played him three -- -- -- they were motivated. And they were at home and they really clearly took it to us and so I wanted to see him respond last night and and we competed -- is very good team. -- -- some of the some of the Western Conference you just have to go compete and some nights you know wins and that's not. But there's some very very high level teams in the west that that Memphis seems to think -- the Western Conference finals and is clear playoff team in my opinion and then they're very very talented in the front -- Is difficult. So we got to bring it every night and I concerned I would be concerned if we didn't bring effort but I did see our team bring effort to compete in and that's and that's a gratifying -- there was something that was interesting in the blowout loss to the Clippers. Clippers are run and -- up they get a -- a timeout called Mark Jackson walks out. Your head coach -- stares down the Clippers or seemingly separated and and you let it get it. Is that show boating on what sport ballpark or. He's he's setting the tone for his team saying Lowell we are not gonna let a team do that help us and I'm the stand out here and make sure my guys see me. Looking at their -- and you know I'm Jamal was there I didn't I didn't see it good but that badly and when I like and I say it didn't happen I didn't see it but he. He's a competitor anybody that's in this business whether it's somebody that sits in the front office or as a coach or a player. Trainer or anybody you wanna compete and you only to lose and then it in the course of competition. You're frustrated and when you see a team handling you like that as a coach player whatever it myself. It's tough finalists and everything is all right but I'm as good nights for those things go your way and we had had them in the civil position three -- of forwards so. It was you know I love mark coming played -- -- a long time part of part of the reason I. Like him as our coach is competitive so so I didn't see it and I've been lucky. If he doesn't like losing on final that is another all that great you anyone on the left hand column task talk about your rosters is somewhat sticky question. It involves Andrew Bogut he was seen on the court. Shooting jumpers what can enjoyable to do right now. We know what he's doing a lot and he's he's slowly working his way back but against somebody asked me the other day it's as. There's a difference in being able to play -- basketball -- able to just say you're fully heal from an injury it's it's a very different threshold so. He's working hard towards it -- rates him out there before the game is to continue to do that and work his way back into it but until -- actually practices. Sees how his body feels it'll just be a work in progress NBA's great for rumors no question about that your team was pulled into a rumor involving Rudy Gay of the Memphis Grizzlies. Who knew less about that specifically more about what does that say about your roster when you are being pulled into discussions. And look at seemingly about guys someone likes about your team right well you know I think let everybody. The thing that I would say to tell anybody and into our fans and into you as well as. We're always looking to make our team better what happens during the trading deadline and there's a lot of speculation about moves you should make him. And fans get excited about how we can improve our team and and the fact it. You would say -- Manuel nice thing about our roster is is that we have assets that that people find attractive. So I anytime you have that it's it's a boon because your phone rings if if our phone never rang -- if you wonder what do we have here and the covers there. But we you know we we we real -- roster. Love our players and and an -- if you have a good roster and Jimmy young roster Jamison which is -- -- have. Phone's gonna ring and and that's just the nature of the business you're always looking to improve your team about this stretch is particularly tough against teams that are playoff caliber teams it continues on Friday against Portland. You've got a bunch of Denver's coming up San Antonio has come up. Do you learn more about your team. In games against top tier competition. I think so yeah I mean certainly be learning -- by your team against the lower tier competition to have. Just take care of business whether it's team you should be or change compete with fourteen that maybe is no you know you're overmatched against so. We're -- and the thing about it say about our team Jamison -- we're a work in progress we're learning what we are it's a new group of guys we are not. This Antonio Spurs which is a team's been together a long time. I even Oklahoma City Thunder it's got some continuity of the Clippers are fairly new team but they're very talented team. Memphis a team we played last night lot of continuity that this is a team that's been successful. We're learning about our team from -- -- the standpoint from a coaching standpoint from a player's standpoint they're learning about each other. So when you play a tough stretch of games you learn how do you perform a tough stretch you're gonna learn how to perform on the road are you forming an underdog -- to call when you're supposed to win putted four we lost in the rough. It's all something we are learning down and continuing to learn but I'm. Don't let our guys work very hard we -- very hard working team a great culture and that's we have to look continue to do but what. But lose at home is tough because it's funny last week when we played the Clippers. One of the referees walked over to our owner and he says that the referees look they can't miss the whole -- to go to all the -- He said I am your fans as we sit our own and -- your fans. Are a hands down. The best fans in the NBA is that why I think that's true so we lose at home. I go home I'm driving home last night I'm upset right I don't want to lose. And now I do you feel like you let the fans down and and I really believe that and I think our players believe that because they give so much energy and effort every night in our players and I feel that. And any -- it is double that you don't wanna lose and you feel bad because we have such great support it's. It's very unique I mean it's very unique it's the one great entity in the Bay Area were your sports fan doesn't matter if you're niners -- Raiders a's or Giants doesn't matter is the one. Forced everyone comes together Raanan has been a good run so far on a third of the season Bob thanks very much for joining us here chronicle have to do it again next week thanks him.
