Melvin on Colon: 'He knows most of these guys and they all like him'
Transcript
-- -- -- -- Well there he's going to be catching everybody right away. That's something we don't get caught doing things where one guys catch one child. You know even our younger guys are gonna catch -- You know early on before we get in the games are gonna get to see you know Brett Anderson has throw all our guys not just Jason Norris. That's I think that's proper way to go about things -- you get into a game and you have seen a catcher before and can. You know it can. Kind of take back from what you're trying to do in your first couple times out just wanna go out there and be able. To do -- thing in and having a little bit of background history catchers normally does back there helps. You haven't seen. And heard it right it. Well I think you know we've certainly month. As you look at his numbers. Swings the bat pretty well and got some power -- know that. We like power around here too so you know as far as the pecking order goes he's probably the next guy. It'll take a look for is there Taylor and everybody here and Ortiz as well so. You know -- in our first two I think we have the ability to get all these guys -- them. You know we're probably -- they got to relive them. Right now is the as the next option on those first. And he told me -- you know. Post -- suspect. I don't. He fit in very well here before and I see that in the same case and he knows most these guys and help like him very much. And then go along with the mall and was actually nice resource for her younger starters -- I don't see any problems there. I don't know I don't know yet. Chances. And it's something you. You. Know I had not heard that I probably need to talk to him before but I have I have not heard that. Mean -- A big concern. You if I let -- -- -- -- it. Well. You know what I I don't. Those things are also MM DO LP comment on that. Our plans are. You know we're gonna get ready for season your spring training as far as. You know what I again I I have not talked to him since last year right after it happened and we'll we'll have a conversation. Maybe -- what that was about. Challenges this thing for you in terms it means something outfielders having -- infielders and again Brett is playing where we. Significantly. Right and that's why we we have spring training we had a -- longer spring this year. And will be able to do that. You know as far as formulas and so forth going into the season could be as easy as he shows up -- the ball park becomes bearing gifts. Along those lines. We'll figure it out. No I think he I shower before coming here yeah. It's strictly. I think -- I think. Maybe in order to Wilson. But other that I can't remember last -- come do. Spring and and having so few guys that you really have to worry about -- -- wise -- training staff does a terrific job. You know monitoring that stuff and over the course of the season last year. I don't like -- inequitable making trips and all winter long this year to go see guys and make sure there proper shape and and not just calling guys and then taken -- work for actually going there working them out so they've done a great job and I think we're we're seeing. You know the fruits of that right now -- -- many healthy guys we have coming to camp. -- And it. We. Were all. It was and you know you try to. You know I was trying to find the right spot for to get a minute game and you know there are a lot of things that that played into that where we were in the season. What he meant to us what his role was and it wasn't easy to just get him back in there and a lower leverage situations so. You know once his spot came up I felt like the best thing to do is get him back spot he knew that he pitches and I was comfortable doing it when he came out and did beautifully for us. And really was kind of a pick me up for all of us we knew emotionally. It could be very difficult for a bit. He went out there and pitched in the same fashion it. That he had for us -- here and we're all tickled about.
A's manager Bob Melvin says he doesn't expect any issues with Bartolo Colon after his season was cut short by a drug suspension.
