Maiocco and Ratto break down the Alex Smith trade
Transcript
You hear of Alex Smith done in San Francisco this is ensuring that if we talked about you -- was it did down. Blasted -- well we -- percentage rate after the agency Chiefs -- baked it out. With the 49 -- are getting pretty good now this is for both according to multiple reports when he thirteen the second round pick. Which is very -- she's a very good last year 34 overall and eight point fourteen conditional pick that could be 82 or a third round pick. We'll go inside the stereo. Olive -- here with the 49ers insider Matt Mayo felt the great career Brad Nelson first of all guys I'll ask you your reaction to what the forty niners got four Alex Smith. It's everything they could have hoped to have gotten I mean -- type not a guy who was going to be making even half million dollars is gonna be the highest paid player on the team as a back up. The forty has worked and keep them around -- of a week ago they said to most likely scenarios where that they keep Alex Smith and they trade him. Of course they weren't ever gonna see that they would release him. But I don't know how they could catch him on the roster so. The fact that they are able to dump the salary and get some pretty good draft picks is a win win for the 49ers. I -- so my problem is in wondering. If the 49ers might not have done a little better by waiting a little longer it seemed to me like. They either must've gotten the sense that the the Chiefs put this on the table -- this is it taken -- leave if you don't agree to an hour pull off the table. Because they're still fourteen days before. You know that -- then they had to do something so. I was wonder I was a bit surprised by the timing. What they got form this is certainly you know well within the parameters of a backup quarterback -- -- -- you to see what the what the can conditions are the pick and 2014. But I get the sense that they were sort of held under the gun a little bit because they didn't have to do this now they gonna try to scare another offer maybe they just. Decided weather is going to be another one out there but just finished down get it over west but the fact that they already. Did it today suggests to me that the chief said this is why are wanna offer or pull it off table you don't jump on it quick. Did that is interesting part because no move to be official that's where we're calling it reports say indicate that this has been agreed to it's not official because they can't be official until March 12 and so. A bat what are the chances that this falls through or another team comes in years on the Cardinals they've. We'll give you a first round pick for Alex Smith is there any chance this deal doesn't happen the way it's constructed as right now yeah. There's there's always a chance because like you said a minute deal cannot be consummated until March 12. That's when the new league year opens and in talking to someone I have in the 49ers they say -- that these reports are premature. But of course they're -- they're gonna say that as well because he is officially can't happen until that day so. There's nothing legally binding that says the 49ers have to accept this from the Chiefs there's nothing legally binding saying the Chiefs can't hopefully -- that. Offer off the table but certainly you know it all indications are that this deal will take place pretty much as soon as the trade window is open. And Alex Smith can get what he wants which he wanted to be a starting quarterback in the league. And the 49ers were getting given that opportunity as long as Colin Kapanen was here so he goes on to Kansas City like so many other 300 quarterbacks in the past. Have gone on to Kansas City to become a starter. You know a long list there okay when you look at the writing was on the wall when Colin Kendrick was replaced -- first -- and then we did so well and taken to the Super Bowl Alex Smith -- to have a spot in. -- when you look back -- the Alex Smith era what he meant to the Simpsons the 49ers throughout the years. What legacy -- -- He's that the. Fitted at 49 -- the first thirteen years of the new century. Everything runs to him either directly or indirectly. Mike Nolan is hired because. You know that the 49ers had floundered before that his First Act is to draft Alex Smith. He turns on Alex Smith because -- that doesn't give any immediate return he wants. They run through a series of offensive coordinators. Nolan gets fired. In part because he couldn't surround Smith with -- any workable parts of them Frank Gore. Mike Singletary comes in he can't he has even less knowledge of the offense that. Then Mike Nolan does he turns on Alex Smith it takes until they they go out and get Jim Harbaugh. That the 49ers find out yeah -- Alex Alex Smith has some value here. And so. Everything basically it's after the 49ers since the turn of the century you can -- Alex Smith therefore he is for now. The seminal figure of this franchise for the last thirteen year. Or ray I'd say even the -- Mike Nolan and the reason he got fired was because Alex Smith wasn't healthy. I mean that the 49 no outs and how horrible rookie season his second year they were seven and nine and he was playing pretty good football. And then he got hurt and we pretty much we miss all that 2008 season the foreigners and have a backup quarterback. In 2009. He missed -- 2008 he missed the entire season. In the ended up putting yelled JT is sold and was a quarterback you before it was it was Trent Dilfer. So there were a lot of issues there with the partners I think for as far as Alex Smith. There's 45% of forty niner fans -- like the guy unconditionally. And I think you're 45%. Of forty our fans who anything he did it wasn't enough they didn't like him and then I think there's a 10%. Fan base that kind of swung with whichever way the wind was blowing so I don't think it's is it it's an impossible question answer what his legacy is -- his legacy is different. To everybody but alternately I think. What that he did in the NN FC playoff game against the Saints how he played with. As well as any 49ers quarterback and a clutch setting has ever played. And then to come back this season and play very well and the way that he lost his starting job I think overall. I think most forty niner fans what have you generally positive. Thought about Alex Smith. As those eight seasons unfolded the ups and the downs and boy I tell you there were some downs. But that the highs are pretty high and I think he ended his tenure with the 49ers. With a lot of credit as far as how he's handled the whole situation how he he wasn't a divisive force in the locker room he helped Collins Japanese as much as he could. And people will remember that from him.
