Justin Braun lost father-in-law prior to Game 1: ‘Tough day'

It was a tough Memorial Day this year for Justin Braun.

The Sharks defenseman was a minus-two in the team's Stanley Cup Final Game 1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. But the real difficult time came earlier when Braun lost his father-in-law, 13-year NHL veteran Tom Lysiak, who passed away at the age of 63 after his battle with leukemia.

"He was great, full of life," Braun told a select group of reporters after Game 1. "Loved to hang out with the boys. Loved to talk about his hockey days. Great father, great husband. Great to me, welcomed me into the family.

"Just a tough day."

Lysiak played for the Atlanta Flames and Chicago Blackhawks. The second overall draft pick in 1973, Lysiak was runner-up for rookie of the year, played in three consecutive All-Star Games, and totaled 292 goals and 551 assists over 919 career games.

Braun, 29, will be back on the ice on Wednesday night in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final.
