Andrew McCutchen comes through for Giants hours after trade rumors

The MLB trade deadline passed 10 minutes before the San Francisco Giants saw their first pitch against the San Diego Padres. The Giants stood pat, which included hanging on to outfielder Andrew McCutchen.

There was some interest in the 31-year-old, including from the New York Yankees, but McCutchen suited up in orange and black on Tuesday. He rewarded his front office's decision in his second at-bat.

McCutchen stepped up to the plate in the fifth inning, with the game tied 1-1, and belted a solo home run to give San Francisco a 2-1 lead.

The Padres ultimately tied the game, but the Giants emerged victorious in extra innings for a second straight game.

McCutchen, who's slashing .258/.353/.413 with 11 homers and 44 RBI, could still be traded in August if he passes through waivers. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year, and the Giants are 4.5 games back of the second Wild Card spot as of this writing.
