Center Ben Garland, who is slated to be the 49ers’ starter while Weston Richburg remains on physically unable to perform, was limited in practice Thursday for the second day in a row.

Garland had not taken part in a full practice since Aug. 17. He left practice early on Aug. 18 when he sustained an ankle injury.

Meanwhile, rookie receiver Brandon Aiyuk (hamstring) returned to limited practice, while receiver Deebo Samuel  (foot) and cornerback Jason Verrett (hamstring) did not practice.

The 49ers are scheduled to open the regular season on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals at Levi’s Stadium.

If Garland is unable to play, the 49ers could move presumptive starting right guard Daniel Brunskill to center with Tom Compton playing guard.

The other option for the 49ers would be to promote veteran Hroniss Grasu from the practice squad to serve as the starter for Sunday.
