SANTA CLARA -- At least 49ers second-year safety Taylor Mays is not being subjected to unfounded trade speculation. There's no speculation about it.

The 49ers are actively seeking trade proposals for Mays, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed Thursday. The 49ers sent a mass email to the 31 other NFL clubs expressing that Mays was on the trade block. After that news became public, Harbaugh said he and general manager Trent Baalke spoke to Mays about his status with the team.

"Full disclosure, there have been inquiries about Taylor over the past eight days," Harbaugh said. "Now it's to the point, let's check it out. That's where we are now."Mays was the No. 49 overall pick in last year's draft, and one of the more intriguing draft prospects because of his unique blend of size (6-foot-3, 230 pounds) and straight-line speed. But Mays does not appear to have a future with the 49ers. The 49ers agreed to terms Thursday with free-agent Donte Whitner on a three-year 11.75 million contract. Reggie Smith has emerged as a likely starter. The 49ers also added seven-year veteran Madieu Williams this week.Mays took part in Thursday's practice, working with the second- and third-string units.
