Jed Lowrie bumps aside Jason Giambi to set Oakland doubles record

ARLINGTON, Texas — Jed Lowrie entered the record books Friday night with his 48th double, setting a new Oakland mark for most two-baggers in a season.

Lowrie set the record with a drive to center off Rangers lefty Martin Perez. With that, he broke a tie with Jason Giambi, who hit 47 doubles back in 2001.

Lowrie’s 48 doubles are the most by an Athletic since Wally Moses also had 48 back in 1937 for the Philadelphia A’s. The franchise record is held by Al Simmons, who had 53 in 1926.

Lowrie, 33, entered the night hitting .278 with 14 homers and 67 RBI. That solid production, combined with the durability he’s shown after last year’s injury-marred campaign, have the A’s seriously considering picking up Lowrie’s $6 million club option for next season. There’s a $1 million buyout.
