Mark McGwire's 17-year-old son smashes home runs like dad in showcase

McGwire is back. No, not Mark, but the last name certainly is.

Stemming off ESPN’s recent debut of “Long Gone Summer,” which highlights former A’s slugger Mark McGwire and ex-Chicago Cubs outfielder Samy Sosa’s intense home run race back in 1998 when McGwire was a St. Louis Cardinal, is footage of Mac’s son Max taking some swings and hitting some bombs.

Max, 17, is currently participating in the Perfect Game National Showcase in Hoover, Ala.

The showcase is put on annually for athletes heading into their final year of high school.

For Max, it’s the perfect opportunity to prove why his player rating (9.5 for Perfect Game) is as high as it is.

The first baseman and right-handed pitcher is described on the site as someone who “moves very well off the bag at first base, has agile feet, big arm strength for the position and no reason athletically that he can't play third base or a corner outfield position.”

It was also noted in the report that the 6-foot-2, 185-pounder has a “high hand start and a quick and short path to the ball.”

Mark himself was known to have a short, compact swing in the midst of an illustrious 16-year career, and well, those numbers speak for themselves.

Max, an Oklahoma commit, also received some praise for his timing and the fact he “can hit bombs already without adult strength.”

His dad had a strong MLB resume with 12 All-Star selections, five single-season home-run crowns, two World Series rings and an AL Rookie of the Year Award in 1987.

It appears the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
