Santa Cruz D.A. won't charge Giants' Sandoval

Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval will not face charges related to an alleged sexual assault, Santa Cruz District Attorney Bob Lee announced Monday.

"The Santa Cruz County Sheriffs Investigation Bureau did an extensive investigation including interviewing witnesses, serving search warrants, reviewing security camera video tapes, text messages, toxicology reports and analyzing physical evidence," Lee said. "Based on review of this thorough investigation, the District Attorneys office has reached this same conclusion."

On July 12, the Sheriff's Department released a statement announcing that Sandoval would not be arrested for a June 1 incident that named the Giants' young star as a suspect. A Santa Cruz woman went to authorities claiming she had met Sandoval at a club and went back to the Seascape Beach Resort with him. The alleged incident occurred while Sandoval was on the disabled list recovering from hand surgery.

"The nature and number of the complainant's inconsistencies leaves us unable to establish her version of events beyond a reasonable doubt," Lee said. "Nothing from the physical evidence and other witnesses helped corroborate her story. All the evidence that might be relevant to the contested issues of force and lack of consent is simply inconclusive."

In his fourth full big-league season, Sandoval is batting .307 with eight home runs and 30 RBI for the first-place Giants.
