A year ago, Brock broke training camp as the 49ers' No. 3 cornerback and promptly intercepted passes in his first two games. But then he was sidelined due to hand surgery and never regained his role from then-rookie Chris Culliver. Brock was forced into action in the NFC championship game in the sub package when starter Tarell Brown was injured, and he was in coverage on Mario Manningham's important fourth-quarter touchdown.
Cox is seeking to make a return to the NFL after the Denver Broncos cut him last summer. Cox was acquitted on sexual abuse charges in March and the 49ers almost immediately signed him to a contract. (There is no word from the NFL on whether Cox will face punishment under the league's policy on personal conduct.) Brock might be a better cornerback than Cox, but Cox has versatility on his side. He can play cornerback, nickel back and also return kicks and punts. That could give Cox an edge as the 49ers' fourth cornerback because he could also be active as the backup return man.
