The Royals signed former USF pitcher and No. 5 overall pick in this year's draft Kyle Zimmer, the team announced Thursday.

Terms of the deal were not released, but the slot value for the fifth pick is 3.5 million. Earlier in the day, the Royals went over slot value for their third-round pick. Left handed pitcher Colin Rodgers was signed for 700,000 despite MLB's slot value for the 100th overall pick of 476,500.

Zimmer, 20, is expected to joins the Royals' Arizona rookie league team before being assigned to a highle minor league club.

Zimmer, six-foot-four and 220 pounds, went 5-3 with a 2.85 ERA in 13 starts with the Dons last season. He led the WCC in shutouts, strikeouts and strikeouts per nine innings.

Zimmer, who was born in San Francisco, converted to pitcher his freshman year at USF and is now highly touted for his mid-90s fastball and biting curveball.
