Warriors stars Stephen Curry, Andre Iguodala, David Lee and Klay Thompson were among 28 NBA players named Thursday to the initial Team USA roster for upcoming international basketball competitions.

The pool, compiled by USAB chairman Jerry Colangelo and coach Mike Kyzyzewski, will be trimmed to 12 for the FIBA World Cup roster this summer (Aug. 30-Sept. 14) in Spain and then recast yet again for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Kings big man DeMarcus Cousins also was invited to join the roster.

Among others invited are reigning MVP LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Paul George, Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Kevin Love, Carmelo Anthony and Damian Lillard.

It's first time as many as four Warriors have been selected; no other team had more than two. Lee and Thompson are joining 12 other first-timers hoping to make their Team USA debuts.

Iguodala has twice engaged in international play, first as a member of the 2010 FIBA World Championship team in Turkey and then with the 2012 Olympic team in London. Both times he was a member of the Philadelphia 76ers.

Curry, with a chance to compete internationally for the second time, also was a member of the '10 team that went 9-0 to win gold Turkey.

"He was a young guy on our World Championship team in Istanbul,'' Kryzyzewski said Thursday. "He's one of the great players in the league, and one of the unique players in the fact that he can play both guard positions because he's such a terrific scorer.

"He's an easy guy to play with, guys love him and he's definitely not afraid. And he's having a sensational year. I'm excited about the opportunity to coach a Curry again. I had his brother (Seth), and if I was smart I might have had Stephen on.''

Thompson, in his third NBA season, was among four first-timers invited largely for their perimeter shooting, joining Atlanta's Kyle Korver, Utah's Gordan Hayward, Washington's Bradley Beal.

Lee, a nine-year veteran, was named to the initial roster of the 2010-12 team but injured a finger during practices and was forced to withdraw.

Should team USA win the World Cup in Spain this summer, it will receive the summer of 2015 off. Otherwise, it will have to participate in qualifying rounds that summer for the '16 Olympics.
