Warriors' Curry uncertain about Game 3 vs Rockets

HOUSTON -– After staying off his tender right ankle for three days, Stephen Curry returned to practice Wednesday but stopped short of pronouncing himself ready to play Game 3 against the Rockets on Thursday.

“Based on how I feel right now, I probably couldn’t play,” Curry said after Warriors practiced at Toyota Center. “But (Thursday) it could be different.”

Though the Warriors won Game 2 in Oakland without Curry, they are hopeful he can return as they seek to take a 3-0 series lead over Houston.

“We’ll talk to him tonight, talk to him tomorrow as well and figure it out from there,” coach Steve Kerr said of Curry, who is listed as questionable for Game 3.

That Curry was able to practice is the clearest sign yet that his ankle is not seriously injured. He underwent an MRI test on Tuesday, with the team announcing the test “did not reveal anything concern.”

Curry said there is noticeable progress, but he expressed caution, adding that it is one thing to feel better and quite another to be game-ready.

He was unable to go full speed in practice, but he’s clearly further along than he was prior to Game 2 Monday, when he attempted to warm up and decided to shut down seven minutes later.

“That’s why I didn’t play Game 2, because I tried my best to simulate moves that I probably would have to do in a game and I couldn’t do it,” he said. “If that happens (Thursday) at full speed, we’ll adjust accordingly.

“But, obviously, my heart is geared toward playing and being out there with my teammates.”

The Warriors will monitor Curry at Thursday morning at shootaround and, quite likely, against prior to tipoff before making a decision. If Curry is unable to play in Game 3, expect backup point guard Shaun Livingston to enter the starting lineup, as he did in Game 2.
