Cal advances to first College World Series since '92

CSNBayArea.com staffThe California Golden Bears baseball program swept Dallas Baptist in the best-of-three Santa Clara Super Regional to advance to the College World Series for the first time since 1992.Prior to the season, the Cal baseball program was facing the elimination after the 2011 schedule. Erik Johnson allowed just two runs on three hits and four walks in six innings to pick up the win. Kevin Miller, Kyle Porter and Matt Flemer each worked a scoreless inning to close out the Patriots and set off a celebration in what was essentially a home series for Cal.Cal catcher Chadd Krist's two-run shot in the first inning gave the Golden Bears an early lead. Krist finished with two hits and three RBI. Pac-10 Player of the Year Tony Renda had three hits and an RBI, as did second baseman Derek Cambell.Cal will be joined in Omaha by the North Carolina Tar Heels, who eliminated the Stanford Cardinal, Vanderbilt, Florida, Texas and South Carolina. Two elimination games -- Viginia vs. U.C. Irvine and Florida State vs. Texas A&M -- will take place Monday to determine the final two spots for the World Series, which starts on June 18.
