The 49ers on Wednesday waived center Marcus Martin, a third-round pick in 2014, the club announced.

Martin started all eight games in which he appeared as a rookie. He started 14 games in 2015 while Daniel Kilgore was still recovering from an ankle injury.

But Martin struggled, and he was inactive for nine games last season. Martin made four starts after Kilgore sustained an injury but he was placed on injured reserve with two games remaining due to an ankle injury.

The 49ers selected Martin with the No. 70 overall pick in the ’14 draft from USC.

Martin becomes the third 49ers veteran player the club has released this week, joining wide receiver Torrey Smith and safety Antoine Bethea.
