The college basketball player who agreed to attend the 49ers’ rookie camp this week on a tryout has reconsidered.

Instead, he’ll return to college and attempt to play one season of NCAA Division II football.

Zach Noreen, a 6-foot-6 forward at Bemidji (Minnesota) State, completed his college eligibility in basketball. But he has decided to play football in the fall. He has not played football since his senior year of high school in 2009.

"I did not see this opportunity coming from a smaller Division II school," Noreen told the Bemidji Pioneer. "I talked with past players who regret leaving early and wished that they would have used their last year of eligibility."

If Noreen had attended the 49ers’ rookie camp, which runs Friday through Sunday, he would have lost his NCAA football eligibility. The 49ers envision Noreen as a tight end.
