Don't expect 49ers roster upgrades

Over the past 36 hours, I've received numerous inquiries about whom the 49ers might acquire for immediate assistance at cornerback or wide receiver. My answer: Short of a blockbuster trade, nobody. The good players are already on NFL rosters.
The help at cornerback, theoretically, can come from within. Veteran Shawntae Spencer is rounding into shape. If the 49ers' coaching staff believes he is one of the team's top three cornerbacks, we'll probably find out this week.Currently, Carlos Rogersand Tarell Brown are the starting cornerbacks. Tramaine Brock is the No. 3 corner. Spencer is No. 4, and rookie Chris Culliver is No. 5.At receiver, the 49ers are likely to have four health receivers Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Michael Crabtree is expected to return to action, joining Josh Morgan, Ted Ginn and Kyle Williams. Braylon Edwardsmight not play due to a right knee sprain.Sure, the 49ers could add a receiver to the scout team to help take some of the scout-team burden off the healthy players. Currently, Joe Hastings is the only wideout on the practice squad. The 49ers worked out free-agent receiver Donnie Avery two weeks ago. But there was never any intention of signing him. Teams will often work out recently released players who are coming off injuries just to have their information updated.
