Ex-49ers RT Anthony Davis calls out Joe Staley: ‘Can't be soft'

Former 49ers right tackle Anthony Davis, who has stated his intention of attempting to return to the NFL next season, suggested on Saturday morning he did not believe the team would fall so dramatically.

Davis’ loss hit the 49ers hard this season, as the right side of the team’s offensive line has struggled mightily.

Davis wrote on Twitter (and has since deleted it):

Veteran offensive lineman Erik Pears, whom the first envisioned as a guard when they signed him as a free agent, was moved to right tackle to fill the vacancy that was created by Davis’ absence.

If that can be construed as a criticism of Pears, it came after Davis issued a critique of 49ers left tackle Joe Staley.

Davis responded to a video clip from the 49ers’ Oct. 22 game against the Seattle Seahawks that showed safety Kam Chancellor standing up Staley on an outside running play.

Davis wrote about the play involving Staley, a four-time Pro Bowl selection:

Someone responded, “Why you gotta do Joe like that?” And that prompted Davis to reply:

Another person on Twitter noted that at least Staley is “out there trying.”
