No NFL player has been more popular than 49ers starting quarterback Colin Kaepernick this offseason.
From April 1 to Sept. 3, Kaepernick's jersey has been purchased more than any other, according to the merchandise retail website Fanatics.com. It's the era of the quarterback, as Kaepernick beat out Robert Griffin III, Peyton Manning, and Russell Wilson for the honor.
"With all the excitement around Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers heading into the season, we’re seeing strong demand for his merchandise not only in the San Francisco area, but across the entire country," Fanatics.com president Jamie Davis told CSNBayArea.com.
The national recognition is no surprise after Kaepernick threw for 302 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 62 yards and another score in the 49ers' 34-31 loss to the Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII. Despite the defeat, Kaepernick's talents were on display for what was estimated to be the third most-viewed program in television history with 108.4 million people watching.
The second best-selling San Francisco jersey belonged to Patrick Willis, who helped Kaepernick lead the 49ers to the second-most team merchandise sales this offseason, behind only the Dallas Cowboys. Last offseason, before the team's trip to the Super Bowl, the 49ers weren't even in the Top 5, as the Steelers, Cowboys, Packers, Bears and Broncos were the most purchased. Sales of 49ers merchandise are up over 150 percent compared to last offseason.
