BALTIMORE – As the 49ers await word from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on the length of Aldon Smith’s possible suspension, they made sure backup Corey Lemonier is in shape to handle the rigors of the regular season.

Lemonier played 70 snaps on defense, as well as a team-high 14 snaps on special teams Thursday night in the 49ers’ 23-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the exhibition opener for both teams.

Last season when Smith stepped away for five games to seek treatment for substance abuse, Lemonier and Dan Skuta shared the duties in his place. Skuta played on base downs and Lemonier entered in pass-rush situations.

On Thursday, Lemonier, a second-year player, was credited with three tackles and a sack in his extended playing time against the Ravens.
