SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers added some competition for the offensive line with the selection of USC center Marcus Martin in the third round.

College career: He entered the starting lineup at left guard in 2011 and played two seasons there before transitioning to center last season. He was a team captain and was a consensus All-Pac-12 Conference first-team choice.

Scouting report: “He anchors well with the size and foot quickness to make an impact run blocking and protecting the pocket. Martin has room to tighten his discipline and technique and needs to show he’s healthy, but he flashes the natural ability, both physical and mental, to be a quality next level player and he should only improve with pro coaching. He's a second day draft pick and future NFL starter.” –

How he fits: The 49ers showed no interest in re-signing veteran Jonathan Goodwin. The 49ers signed presumptive starter Daniel Kilgore to a contract extension, but opened the door for Martin to join the competition. Kilgore solidified his grasp on the starting job with a strong offseason. But Martin continues to work to put himself into position to be a key backup on the offensive line.
