As the 49ers finished up on-field preparations Wednesday, word filtered out to the practice field that the Indianapolis Colts had acquired running back Trent Richardson from the Cleveland Browns for a first-round draft pick.

The 49ers had been game-planning to face running backs Ahmad Bradshaw and Donald Brown.

Now, they know there’s a new running back for whom they must prepare.

Indianapolis Colts coach Chuck Pagano said Thursday that Richardson will play Sunday against the 49ers at Candlestick Park. How much playing time will he get?

“As much as he can handle,” Pagano said.

In two games with the Browns, Richardson gained 105 yards and no touchdowns on 31 carries for a 3.4 average. He was the No. 3 overall pick of Cleveland in last year’s draft. As a rookie, he rushed for 950 yards and 11 touchdowns with a 3.6 average.

“We know what he brings to the table as a runner, as a pass catcher, as a protector, so we feel, obviously, we’re very excited to have Trent in the fold,” Pagano said.

“We did not bring him in here, OK, to be the water boy on Sunday. So he’ll be ready to roll.”

The Colts lost their starting running back, Vick Ballard, to a torn ACL in practice last week. Bradshaw has 91 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries to lead the Colts through two games.
