Report: Retired Anthony Davis owes 49ers more money

Anthony Davis’ second retirement from the NFL in 15 months will reportedly require him to repay $2.735 million to the 49ers.

Davis repaid the 49ers a sum of $1.667 million when he stepped away from the game in June 2015. And Pro Football Talk reports that he must pay the balance of the signing bonus money he previously received in anticipation of future services.

A source told CSNBayArea.com that a player must repay past signing bonus money each year he remains retired. Davis was awarded a $7.5 million signing bonus when he signed a $37.3 million extension in April 2013.

In all, Davis’ two retirements will cost him $4.4 million, according to the PFT report.

The 49ers on Tuesday placed Davis on the exempt/left squad list after he informed general manager Trent Baalke that he was retiring. Coach Chip Kelly said he did not personally speak to Davis before he left the squad.

“Trent said that it was because of injuries,” Kelly said. “That’s all I know.

“I don’t know exactly what transpired. I was just told that’s what was going on and then really the next step for us was what are we doing with the roster spot and all those other things. I’ve reached out to Anthony and gave him a call just to talk to him, but I didn’t connect with him yet.”

Davis was diagnosed with a concussion in practice Thursday, Sept. 15, and did not travel with the 49ers to road games at Carolina and Seattle.

"I just want my time and mind intact, when you lose em both, you can't buy em back," Davis tweeted shortly after the 49ers announced his retirement on Monday.

Because Davis was on the 49ers’ 53-man roster for three weeks, he received $216,176 of his scheduled $1.225 million base salary for 2016.

Davis has yet to send in his official retirement paperwork to the NFL. The 49ers sent Davis a letter detailing that at the end of five days, he will be placed on the reserve/left squad list, which makes him ineligible to play for the remainder of the season.
