This past week I was on the diamond for my first baseball game as a part of Cal Hi Sports Bay Area! I was assigned a Peninsula - Bay League match-up between the heavily favored Terra Nova Tigers and the Cougars of Half Moon Bay. The Tigers came into this one undefeated posting an impressive 9-0 record, while the Cougars, coming in 8-5, were in need of a win.

Early on Half Moon Bay's senior starting pitcher Cole Watts had some control issues. With the bases loaded in the top of the first he walked in the first run of the game giving the Tigers the one run lead. Fortunately that was all the damage done. But in the 2nd inning the Tigers' bats got hot. Terra Nova's sophomore Anthony Gordon added two more runs with an impressive stand up triple pushing the lead to 3-0. A few batters later, Vic Guillera hit a blooper to right and it appears another run is going to score, but right fielder Kyle Harwood attempts a throw at home and catcher Tom Howell is there to make the out and end the inning. The Cougars ran off the field fired up, this play was most definitely the momentum swinger and the Cougars put on their rally caps.

In the bottom of the third, with runners on the corners and the Cougs trailing 4-1, Peter Bacich was able to find the gap in right center for an RBI single cutting it to just a two run deficit. Half Moon Bay wasn't finished. With the base loaded Mike Rupert hits a stand up triple to clear the bases and give his squad a one run lead. And that would be all the Cougars would need.

Watts found his spots and finished the game off with eight strikeouts as the Cougars win big over the Tigers 5-4! What an exciting way to start off the season!
