SAN JOSESan Jose Sharks centerJoe Thornton tonight became just the 78th player in NHL history to reach the historic 1000 point plateau, scoring his milestone marker against Ilya Bryzgalov of the Phoenix Coyotes with a goal at 9:27 of the third period at Jobing.com Arena. The goal was assisted by Logan Couture and Douglas Murray.His first NHL point, also a goal (against Garth Snow), was recorded on Dec. 3, 1997 at Philadelphia.He becomes the second player to record his milestone 1000th point in a Sharks uniform (Vincent Damphousse, 1,205) and joins former Sharks Teemu Selanne (1,336), Jeremy Roenick (1,216) and Bernie Nicholls (1,209) in the 1000-point club. Since the start of the 1997-98 season, no player has tallied more career points than Thornton. He currently ranks 78th on the NHLs all-time points list (306-694=1000) and 54th in assists. Among active NHL players, he ranks ninth in points and 6th in assists.This season, Thornton has posted 69 points (21 goals, 48 assists) in 79 games.Courtesy San Jose Sharks media services
