The first weekend of July has become a time for the MMA world to rejoice and celebrate all its glory. That rings especially true in Las Vegas, where both the UFC and World Series of Fighting will host events this weekend.
WSOF 11 takes place early Saturday afternoon on NBC and is headlined by a lightweight title fight between champion Justin Gaethje and Nick Newell. Both are 11-0 fighters with a knack for finishing their opponents. Co-main event for that card pits San Jose's Jon Fitch against MMA journeyman Dennis Hallman. Fitch, whose opponent changed twice due to injuries, is looking to recover from a devastating submission loss in his WSOF debut.
Later Saturday night, the UFC will showcase two of its best champions in battles against tough challengers. Women's Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey is putting her undefeated reputation on the line against Canadian Alexis Davis in UFC 175's co-main event. And Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman taking on the Brazilian Lyoto Machida in the main event. Weidman, who defeated Anderson Silva last July for the title and defended it in December, is still looking to prove his victories were no fluke.
With most of the attention on the title fights, Sacramento bantamweight Urijah Faber -- who's coming off a loss to Renan Barao -- and Alex Caceres will main event the preliminary bouts in a highly anticipated showdown. Caceres called out Faber and to the shock of many who feel Faber is beyond the caliber of opponent Caceres has faced, he accepted.
With WSOF 11 and UFC 175 on the docket for Fourth of July weekend, MMA fans can enjoy fireworks on both Friday and Saturday.
