A's acquire catcher Stephen Vogt from Rays

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland Athletics have acquired catcher Stephen Vogt from the Tampa Bay Rays for a player to be named later or cash considerations, the team announced Friday. Vogt has been optioned to Triple-A Sacramento. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the A’s designated right-handed pitcher Dan Otero for assignment.

Vogt batted .296 with a home run and four RBI in 16 spring training games. He was on the Rays Opening Day roster last year and had three stints with Tampa Bay in his Major League debut. He appeared in 18 games, including seven at catcher, five at designated hitter and two in left field. The 28-year-old Vogt batted .303 against right-handed pitching at Triple-A Durham

Otero was claimed off waivers from the Yankees on March 29. He began the spring with San Francisco and was optioned to Fresno March 15. He was claimed off waivers by New York March 26 but was designated for assignment the next day. Otero spent most of the 2012 season at Triple-A Fresno, going 5-5 with a 2.90 ERA in 48 relief appearances. He also made 12 appearances with San Francisco, logging a 5.84 ERA in his Major League debut.
