UPDATE (Wednesday at 11 a.m.) Yu Darvish will miss his scheduled start in Monday's season opener, leaving the already injury-riddled Texas Rangers without their ace.

Darvish said through his interpreter Tuesday that he knew he wasn't going to be ready to pitch in the opener at home against Philadelphia because of neck stiffness.

The announcement came a day after Darvish stopped throwing while playing catch.

Texas hasn’t officially changed its Opening Day plans yet, but T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports that Yu Darvish is unlikely to make his Game 1 start because of a stiff neck.

For now general manager Jon Daniels is saying the Rangers could simply push back Darvish’s start, basically moving him to the end of the rotation, which wouldn’t require placing him on the disabled list.
