OAKLAND -- True to his word, manager Bob Melvin is giving Stephen Vogt a day of rest in the A's Saturday day game following Friday's night game.
Vogt, who hit a solo home run for his first major league hit on Friday, will give way to Derek Norris -- not John Jaso.
"We'll definitely be out of the woods with (Jaso) once we get through with this series," Melvin said of his still-healing catcher. "But it could be in this series that he gets his start. "
It's a valuable chance for Norris against a right-handed pitcher, as Melvin indicated Friday the majority of his playing time would come against lefties. Norris is hitting .134 against right-handers this year and has never faced Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright.
Despite his recent struggles at the plate and subsequent lack of playing time, Melvin gave the second-year backstop a vote of confidence on Friday.
"We still feel like (Norris) is our catcher of the future here," Melvin said.
