Harbaugh not thinking about absent players at OTAs

This week's mandatory 49ers minicamp marks the first and last time of the offseason the entire team will convene in Santa Clara.
Veteran center Jonathan Goodwin remained in South Carolina for most of the offseason program to work out on his own. He joined OTAs last week. And cornerback Tarell Brown spent most of his offseason in Texas, concentrating on speed workouts.
Up to this point, the workouts have been "voluntary." There is no penalty for players who decide to train on their own, unless a player has a workout bonus he would not collect due to his absence. Goodwin does not have a workout bonus, and Brown has forfeited a workout bonus of $75,000.
I asked 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh last week about what Goodwin and Brown missed this offseason.
"(We) just really coach the guys that are here," Harbaugh said. "I think Jonathan has a lot of knowledge in the system. So does Tarell Brown. So the guys that are here those are the ones that you coach, and get ready to put them in the position to make the team. And fight for spots. So that's really where the focus is. So (I) can't say that I've thought much about how much that would affect someone that's not here."
In reality, a veteran does not miss much if he does not attend the offseason program. But the 49ers have made it a point to encourage veterans to take part with the some hefty bonuses.
Patrick Willis and Justin Smith earned $500,000 through workout bonuses. Others with large workout bonuses include: Frank Gore $400,000, Glenn Dorsey $350,000, Donte Whitner $250,000, and Vernon Davis and Joe Staley at $200,000.
If the top players attend, the rest of the team will follow. And that's really what the offseason program is about. It's about bringing the team together, and getting the young players up to speed so training camp can run more efficiently. Players are scheduled to report to training camp on July 24.
