The 49ers re-signed fullback Jason Schepler on Monday and waived fullback Alex Debniak, who played linebacker during his career at Stanford.

Schepler, who was signed after a tryout at the team's rookie camp last month, was released last week when the 49ers added veteran special-teamer Raymond Ventrone to the 90-man roster. Schepler (6 foot 2, 274 pounds) played tight end at Northern Illinois.

Schepler, a blocking specialist, had gotten his weight up to around 290 pounds in hopes of transitioning to the offensive line. But the 49ers worked him out at tight end and decided he was a better fit at fullback.

The 49ers begin their mandatory full-squad minicamp on Tuesday.

Before the 49ers announced the transactions on Monday, Debniak posted the following statement on Twitter: "Only through the experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened."

The 49ers signed Debniak as an undrafted rookie in April.
